Not the way they did it, though. Fatty jumps into the swimming pool and all the vacates as well as the young boy who ends up in a tree. In short that says fat = bad. And there's loads of examples of that.
It's also the reason that fat suit comedies are no longer made.
So I do not subscribe to the notion that it would play well today. Seeing 'inner beauty' would definitely sell in 2024, but in a much more pandering way. Every line would have to steer the viewer back to "being fat is fine", "I'm beautiful on the inside", etc.

Not sure if a film like American History X anymore, kind of seemed more like Skynet even back then.
I don’t think shallow Hal is really in any danger, those kind of broad comedies started with the nutty professor than died out in the wake of the frat pack and apatow inspired comedies. I think the next era of comedy hasn’t really established itself yet, just crumbs of the past and reimaginings
I think you could still do white chicks but RDJ in tropic thunder is the last we will see of that in mainstream.

Also, The Exorcist as it was made would not be allowed today. It would be heavily modified.

The Score. It would be labelled as mocking people with disabilities.
Come to think of it, so would that Gilbert Grape film with Leo. But he would probably be given a pass by Team Woke because he was a child.
