Will Smith has a slavery movie Emancipation that probably would've been a player if not for the slap, Apple could be bold and release it this year

Emancipation is toast. It doesn't matter when it comes out. Smith has rid the film of all potential goodwill, rightly or wrongly, because it will all be about him and not his performance. Also, we don't need another sob story slavery movie.

I'd rate Black Panther 2 below Top Gun Maverick and Avatar 2

I don't think Triangle of Sadness gets in but it looks great. Elvis better not be nominated. That would be gross. Nominate Butler but that's it.

What would be gross is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever getting in just to [yet again] honour Chadwick Boseman. When will the worship end? It's like it's never enough.

In that list, Wakanda Forever should be replaced by Top Gun: Maverick. Now that's a sequel that deserves to be forced in as a lifetime achievement type thing, and by all accounts the film is excellent, too.

Brendan Fraser is playing a 600 pound gay man? That might beat Butler.

Aranofsky has had success directing actors to Oscar wins too. Natalie Portman in Black Swan, Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler (also Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream nominated).

Rourke lost, but the point stands

Sam Mendes desperate for Oscars with a "magic of film" movie starring Olivia Colman (Empire of Light). Will he make a black and white memoir of his childhood after this?

The new Chalamet/Guadagnino movie had good response at Venice and 94% RT so far, but is kind of a cannibal romance so who knows if it would be Oscars friendly

Fraser is also an immensely likable persona that Hollywood needs more. Hoping he wins and gets some higher profile roles.

DOA reviews for this

70% after ten reviews is hardly panic stations.

Fraser, Cruise and Butler seem like 3/5 for nods. Many people of this generation grew up on Fraser movies and people love comeback stories. His standing ovation video has gone viral with folks like The Rock rooting for him. Feels very Renee Zellweger type comeback.

Michelle Williams role in the Fabelmans seems like the type they give Best Supporting Actress to.

Glass Onion is possible Best Picture nominee. I believe Netflix slate is pretty weak this year.

Hopefully A Man Called Otto isn't a complete non-factor as it played a pretty big role in my forum description

I reckon these will be the main films, and by main films I don't mean solely BP nominees, but the ones that get the most weighted love across the board - a Best Actor win trumps a bunch of technical nods, for example.

Amsterdam
Babylon
Banshees of Inisherin
Blonde
Elvis
The Fablemens
The Son
Tár
Top Gun: Maverick
The Whale
Women Talking

I actually see Empire of Light being forgotten due to sheer amount of [big, attention-grabbing] movies vying for awards this year. The only thing absent from my list is what film(s) represent the blacks. Maybe that's why I Wanna Dance With Somebody might do well. Then there's Wakanda Forever, but I think they will vote for anything even slightly prestigious ahead of that.

They can nominate Everything Everywhere All At Once to have another minority led film

I think Avatar 2 should be considered a player until the reviews prove otherwise, after the first one almost won. Although it's possible they only choose one of it, Top Gun and Black Panther.

Blonde has 64 on metacritic and I don't know if Andrew Dominik artistic style lends itself to Best Picture nominations. The Son has some bad early reviews it looks like.

With the Blanchett connection I forgot Tar is a Todd Field movie and not Todd Haynes. If it was Haynes it would have been his usual critically acclaimed with acting nominations but snubbed in Best Picture, but Little Children might have gotten in with 10 nominees. Still the reviews make it sound cold and exact type of movie to be more well liked by critics than Oscars.

This will be the 5th straight year with no Meryl Streep, and nothing particularly close in that time either (maybe the small Little Women role).

EEAAO is getting in and probably winning atleast actress and original screenplay. It's also my prediction for best picture but that category has been very unpredictable lately with an upset 3 out of the last 4 years.

I had Everything on the list but removed it. I just felt the spark around it had faded considerably. But you're also right, it's ripe for a quota pick, but probably not for the big awards - maybe costuming, or it does well at the Globes and other awards but shut out at the Oscars. I don't know, the film just never screamed Academy Awards prestige to me.

The virtue signal has ruled Best Picture wins for several years now. I'd say Shape of Water was the last true non one. What films would be this year's candidate?

Everything Everywhere All at Once - asian representation
Women Talking and She Said - meToo
Top Gun: Maverick - the current thing this year is Ukraine, would a pro American military film be best fitting one for that?

Author:  Algren [ Wed Sep 14, 2022 9:13 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 2023 Contenders

If you want a complete virtue signal, you can't get more than The Woman King, and it's at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes so the Academy won't feel bad about their forced pick. Maybe not Best Picture, but it could be involved at the Oscars somewhere. You could also pick Wakanda Forever, I guess, but that would feel wrong being that it's a superhero flick.
