 2023 Contenders
Everything Everywhere All at Once seems to be the first major Oscar contender for 2023, aside from maybe some tech nominations for The Batman.
Looking ahead at the schedule, these are some I noticed
Cha Cha Real Smooth- most acclaimed and popular comedy drama from Sundance starring Dakota Johnson from awards friendly streaming service Apple TV
Nope- political horror film by Jordan Peele in the vein of Get Out and Us
Are You There God? It's Me Margaret- adaptation of acclaimed and controversial Judy Blume novel about interfaith marriage following their daughter's puberty and maturation. Stars Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates
Don't Worry Darling- psychological thriller in the vein of Gone Girl directed by Olivia Wilde and starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles
TAR- Todd Field's first film since Little Children in 2006. Both of his previous efforts did well in nominations. Stars Cate Blanchett
White Bird- A Wonder Story- A sequel to Wonder (2017) about the main character's grandmother's experience as a child during the holocaust. Directed by Marc Forster. Wonder didn't move the needle awards wise but the subject matter of this could be more suitable
The Banshees of Inisherin- Conflict between two friends arise when one of them abruptly ends their friendship with alarming consequences for both of them. Directed by Martin Macdonagh of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Kenneth Branagh Bee Gees bio pic looks unlikely to be finished in time for 2022. But would be a contender if it did
Canterbury Glass- drama about A doctor and a lawyer forming an unlikely partnership. Stars Christian Bale and Margot Robbie and directed by David O. Russell
She Said- depicts the work done by journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey to break the story of Harvey Weinstein's sexual misconduct allegations. Should contend for actress nominations
Thirteen Lives- story of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue directed by Ron Howard
The Fabelmans- semiautobiographical family drama directed by Steven Spielberg about growing up in mid 20th century Arizona
I Wanna Dance With Somebody- Whitney Houston biopic from the director of Harriet. Should contend for Best Actress
Babylon- period drama set in the golden age of Hollywood directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie
A Man Called Otto- adaptation of acclaimed novel A Man Called Ove, directed by Marc Forster starring Tom Hanks. Should be a Best Actor contender at least
Killers of the Flower Moon- Western crime film directed by Martin Scorcese starring Leonardo Dicaprio. To stream on Apple TV following a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures

 Re: 2023 Contenders
Movies I’m excited about based on directors’ previous works:
Asteroid City — Wes Anderson Apollo 10 1/2 — Richard Linklater Avatar 2 — James Cameron Three Thousand Years of Longing — George Miller The Whale — Darren Aronofsky Men — Alex Garland Lightyear — (Pixar) Everything Everywhere All at Once — Daniels The Northman — Robert Eggers
That said, I doubt the Oscars will really go for any of my favorites as it’s rare for them to do so.

Avatar will probably sweep the technicals. He has been at it for 12 years!

I'd say Babylon is a strong contender. Maybe Elvis?

 Re: 2023 Contenders
Elvis maybe for acting for Butler and Hanks but Baz Luhrmann doesn't seem like a director the academy is into anymore.

 Re: 2023 Contenders
His last two movies had rotten reviews so you could claim that if Elvis is better liked it would be in a different situation. Then again their reviews could also be a sign that Baz is in general polarizing, even Moulin Rouge is only 76%.

 Re: 2023 Contenders
The oscars have about a year-long delay on their responses to controversy, so the best picture will probably go to a movie that condemns violence.
David O Russel seems like a good bet for Best Director. Actors really seem to love him.

Waititi has another movie about American Samoa soccer team that lost to Australia 31-0 in World Cup qualifying, with Fassbender and Moss.

 Re: 2023 Contenders
Avatar 2? The first almost won Best Picture and it wasn't even that great. And populist winner is much needed.

Honestly think Fallout could have been nominated for Best Picture, my assumption there would be similar bias against Top Gun 2

 Re: 2023 Contenders
War movie+80's movie that academy viewers probably grew up watching is more appealing than a spy movie based on a TV show with really bad entries like Mission Impossible 2 sullying the brand.

It's going to be in almost every top ten list at the end of the year. It will get a ton of love from critics groups which will keep it alive all season. I can't imagine it not getting into Picture. Would also be crazy if it didn't get at least one acting nomination for Michelle.

I'm going with Austin Butler for Elvis to win after the last trailer

 Re: 2023 Contenders
I had some issues with the film, but EEAAO would be a good winner. The academy can feel good about awarding a woke(ish) indie movie and a populist fantasy movie. And it fits the anti-violence theme they'll have to adopt after the Will Smith debacle.
But we know the academy have short memories and tend to vote for their friends. So the Daniels will have to kiss a bunch of ass to make this happen.

 Re: 2023 Contenders
Normally I don't care about blockbuster movies getting nominated for Picture but I'd love to see Top Gun: Maverick nominated. I would even say Tom Cruise deserves an Actor nomination. We will see if he'd make my list at the end of the year but I'm pretty sure he will.

 Re: 2023 Contenders
TG2 doing $600M+ and bringing older moviegoers to the box office again and his commitment to the theatrical experience I'm sure will generate goodwill for him. They could treat a best actor / picture nod as a career achievement award. It would be a big contrast to celebrate Cruise following what should have been celebrating Smith last year for his career achievement.

 Re: 2023 Contenders
I think they could just give him the literal lifetime achievement award. Though the last few years they haven't shown those on TV.
