Dune winning would be good for the film industry. A remake of a remake that already won Best Picture would not be, nor would Kenneth Branagh wanking off to his childhood.

After seeing he made a wannabe Manchester by the Sea that's going nowhere, how many rotten movies in a row does George Clooney have to direct before it becomes clear he doesn't have it? Can we see let some other guy like Pitt or Damon have a try directing now?

The movies that came farthest back from where they stood in early December in recent years were probably Green Book and Parasite. Green Book won TIFF and was a crowd pleaser type of movie and Parasite had the best reviews of the year. Green Book was always in play as a Crash type winner and there were some people talking about Parasite as a sleeper to win even this early. I'd say King Richard would follow the Green Book path and Licorice Pizza would follow the Parasite good reviews path although it basically has to win LA film critics circle or else it's out.

So with the three odds on frontrunners, that would suggest Best Picture is down to 5 movies: Belfast, The Power of the Dog, West Side Story, King Richard and Licorice Pizza. Don't Look Up would be the other one but it may have come out a little bit late

Is Being the Ricardos stil a contender with its 58% at RT and 5/10 avg. rating?

If I recall correctly, Parasite was the favorite through most of the season until 1917 won the golden globe, then it ripped off a streak of guild wins that made Best Picture seem inevitable. The academy actually doing the right thing (though 1917 is also a very good movie) is probably the best moment from the show in 10ish years.

Worse reviews than Judy so far which is a bad sign for Kidman beating Stewart

I remember Once Upon A Time In Hollywood being early frontrunner and 1917 and Irishman weren't seeing yet and were lurking. But I looked it up and the prophet predicted Parasite win on Dec 11 and some people agreed with him. However in that year it was after the LA critics award which it won.

Don't Look Up ... the reviews for this movie. Guess I was wrong on that one.

So looks like we're down to Belfast, Power of the Dog, West Side Story and Dune as actual contenders.

Don’t Look Up’s reviews are even worse than Being the Ricardo’s. Oh well, both should still be worthwhile streams.

I feel like West Side Story is going to win because Power of the Dog and Belfast feel like the expected winners, and it’s been since Argo that we had a populist Best Picture winner. It also checks the diversity boxes much better than those predominantly white movies.

Power of the Dog at least has female director

For whatever reason Spielberg is also like 1 for 12 when he gets nominated for Best Picture, he could easily have 3 or 4. West Side Story getting 10 nominations and not winning any major awards would just be business as usual for him.

Actress is absolutely Stewart's to lose.

Leaders so far in critics awards:

Film: Power of the Dog
Director: Campion
Actor: Cumberbatch
Actress: Stewart
Supporting Actor: Smit-McPhee
Supporting Actress: Dunst

Campion/Cumberbatch/Smit-McPhee's leads are by a lot but still not sure I trust Power of the Dog to do as well with Oscars as critics. It is killing so far though.

Belfast is actually doing decent for only being 77 MC with the 2nd most wins in Film.

I feel spilt between BD/BP with one of them being the Dog.

Crash is sitting there like "Yasss please let Power of the Dog take my title for Worst Best Picture winner."

Yeah I know Crash wasn't really that awful, and 05 was a very weak year that it was able to take advantage of, and that the real worst (recent) best picture winner is a A Beautiful Mind, but the image of Jack announcing the Crash upset is still so visceral!

Don't Look Up is awful but I think it will still be nominated. It panders hard to older yet still self-righteous people and that is usually rewarded.

I don't think Belfast will win Picture and hopefully it doesn't, but if it does there shouldn't be a split, it's a director first movie like Roma and if anything fits more as a Director win, Picture loss side of the split. Branagh getting dominated by Campion so far in critics awards is also a bad sign from that perspective.

Best Actress is crazy. I'm sticking with my theory that Stewart doesn't want it which threw the category up in the air. I think her getting nominated and losing would be a good result of establishing her as a credible actress but without the backlash of her haters or pressure for her to re-emerge in Hollywood as an It girl
