Post Oscars 2021 - LIVE Ceremony
I figure this is a good way to keep track of the contenders. This is from oddschecker.com, which is a UK site. New Jersey is the only state in America that lets you bet on the academy awards (everything is legal in New Jersey) so I don't have access to that info.

Anyways, here is how Best Picture looks right now:

Nomadland - 5/1
Trial of the Chicago 7 - 8/1
Mank - 8/1
News of the World - 8/1
Da 5 Bloods - 9/1
The Midnight Sky - 10/1
MacBeth - 12/1
The Green Knight - 14/1
Respect - 14/1
Berstein - 14/1
The French Dispatch - 16/1

Other notables-
Tenet - 25/1
Soul - 33/1
The Invisible Man - 60/1

Invisible is currently below severals movies that have already been delayed, is tied with Fantasy Island and below Underwater at 55/1 :hahaha: . That's just silly. It's not gonna win, but Moss will be a player in the best actress race which is more than so many others have going for them.

As for the rest - just shows that nobody has any clue right now, but Nomadland played well enough to set itself apart from the pack.

Hillbilly Elegy with a 39 metacritic. I hope nobody put money on that one. :funny:

Midnight Sky flopping on meta too with a 54. Bummer I was excited for that, but I’ve also liked many other low rated netflix movies so maybe there’s still some hope.

Netflix is lucky they picked up Black Bottom.

I thought it was legal everywhere in the US now. I've been doing it on Bovada the last two years.

Hmm, maybe its just online. Draftkings won't let you even in Nevada.

Having seen Mank, I think it has a shot at Direction but no way it takes picture. News of the World is getting good, not great reviews and people are forgetting that Da 5 Bloods even exists.

Looks like the path is clearing for Nomadland, but there's still a long ways to go. Black Bottom is getting some buzz so maybe that will be the challenger.

The only way the Oscars will maintain any kind of cultural relevance this year is by giving Best Picture to Soul. Full stop. No one cares about Mank or Nomadland or Chicago 7 or Ma Rainey, sorry to say. (or maybe that’s just me and I’m projecting). In my real life, Soul has more people talking than any other movie this year, by many orders of magnitude.

Also, I adored the movie :wub2:

That'd be awesome! My favorite movie of the year too.

We still have two months to go, but the buzz around Chloe Zhao seems to be even bigger than the movie itself. People love her. Maybe I should check out The Rider. Nomadland is down to 2-1 on oddschecker...

I'd say the only lock right now is Chadwick for Best Actor. Who would even campaign against him? The show will need a feel-good moment and they'll never do any better than that.

I wish. Right now I'm nervous about it even being nominated for Picture but it certainly has a chance. I could absolutely see Carey winning though. And it will get a Screenplay nomination. I just want it to be nominated for so much more. Director, Editing, Cinematography, Makeup & Hairstyling, Original Score, Costume Design, etc...

I have Nomadland as the winner of Best Picture. That's felt like the most likely winner all season to me.

I hope in this case Nomadland gets Oscar'd and doesn't take the trophy going on as heavy favourite of the night. It's just not good of a film IMO though I'm up for its BD win

I still haven't seen it. I will but I'm not in a hurry. I do have a friend that LOVED it but it sounds a little boring to me.

Yes your other friend (me?) found it boring as well :P It has some GREAT moments but there are many parts which are just pedestrian

There you go. I have two conflicting opinions from two different friends. I'll have to decide for myself. Whenever I feel in the mood for it. :P Theaters are opening back up here so honestly if it eventually opens here I may just see it in a theater. I feel it might be harder to give this one my full attention if I watch it at home.

After watching Promising Young Woman last night if Carey Mulligan doesn’t win best actress of will be a huge injustice. What a stupendous performance, full of both subtle moments and big, emotional “Oscar” moments that you really feel Cassie is a human being who feels fear and anguish despite being a badass feminist heroine of sorts

Agreed. Cassie is my favorite character of the year. She's fascinating. I could actually see Carey winning. It's hard to forget the character or performance. This would be the most exciting choice. Giving, say, McDormand another Oscar would be kind of boring. And hopefully they'll feel giving Boseman an Oscar for Ma Rainey is enough and there's no need to also give one to Viola. Zendaya could be a threat but I just don't see them giving her an Oscar for her first nomination. She has to prove herself more.

So just realized that oddschecker has Rainey’s Black Bottom and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom as separate bets at 17 and 18 to one respectively. That at least explains why Chicago 7 is still in second place when it likely won’t even be nominated. :funny:

I am guessing Boseman will be a lock to win Oscar this year even though I don't think any of his performances were awards worthy.

The golden globes didn’t help narrow anything down, Nomadland is -90 now and nobody is gonna bet on anything else, but they did show this year’s crop of oscar bait are extremely flawed while the comedies were excellent. Not that it will matter to the academy who think laughing is a sin.

Nomadland - winner
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Minari
Mank
The Trial of the Chicago 7
The Father
Judas and the Black Messiah
One Night In Miami
Da 5 Bloods
The United States v Billie Holiday

-I think these are the ten, earning them a bunch of fake woke points while boring the entire industry to death. Hopefully at least one of Borat 2, Palm Springs, Soul or Wolfwalkers are able to sneak in but seems unlikely. It would require the academy to acknowledge there is more than one genre of film.

Also something called Annette is rising up on oddschecker. Is it too late for a new contender.?

The combination of the Oscars for the worst movie year ever and a winner with 0 popular appeal (Nomadland) is really rough. The majority of the population wouldn't even give Nomadland the airplane watch after it wins.

It would fit in with the mostly good but instantly forgettable choices they've given us for most of the last ten years. Looks like Parasite was the exception, rather than the start of a trend where they actually award Great movies.

Yeah but can’t you see all the outraged “how did PMY not get in???” articles the next day while the academy is patting themselves on the back for only picking four white films?
