I have Finding Neverland as an alternate right now since Miramax already has The Aviator. I know Miramax is putting all their energy behind these two films, but I still think only one will get the Best Picture nod.

The choices for best picture looks rather bland. Its the best actor category that looks like it would be rather competitive and its the category I look forward to the most

Rusty ... I can not wait to see what you think about it. I bet you will agree its very oscar worthy, both in its performances, and plot.

I agree with a few posters here.

The acting this year has been exceptionally strong but the movies look rather bland.

Alexander: One may be right to say ROTK sweeped 2003 but one can pretty much say that movie news was primarily drived by LOTR from december 2001. So the whole "epic" thing is not limited to last year but 2002, 2003 and some of this year as well. I believe its overkill at this point and unless alexander really pulls something off, I dont see it being received for a winner

Ray: Probably a lock for a nomination provided its good but I do not see it winning unless were blown away or oscar politics come into play again **cough**halle berry**cough**denzel**cough**will smith**cough**

Phantom of the Opera: As much as i wanna see this, its pretty much riding its broadway success. I have a sneaking suspicion were all in for a disappointment here.

There is so little exposure on a lot of other movies. I expect Closer to be nothing that great, Aviator I really dont even understand whats happening with this movie

The loony crazy person in me though wants to see Life Aquatic nominated, just for snickers though

The best oscar race looks very interesting

http://oscarscene.com/predictions/actor1.html

Any of the 20 people here can be a contender for actor nomination from Christian Bale who lost over 60 lbs for his role(oscars love to award people who do dramatic weight gain and loss-see Theron,Hanks,Deniro), to Jim Caviziel, Kevin Bacon, Johnny Depp, and Jamie Fox

The Motorcycle Diaries is not elligible for best foreign film, because not country submitted it.

Among movies released already (contenders)
Maria Full of Grace:
BEst Original screenplay
Best Actress in a Leading Role, Catalina Moreno Sandino
Best Foreign Film (lock)

The Manchurian Candidate:
Best supporting Actress (lead?), Meryl streep

Kill Bill Vol 2.
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Chance to surprise in other categories

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Best Picture
Best Original Screenplay (lock)
Best Actor
BEst Actress (safe bet)

Vera Drake
Best Picture
Best Actress

The Motorcycle Diaries
Best Adapted screenplay

Fahrenheit 9/11
Best Director

The Passion of the Christ
Best Supporting actress

We Don't Live Here Anymore
Best actress, Laura Dern

I really hope Dogville can somehow manage to get something. Nicole is amazing in it, as is the rest of the cast.

I think Closer will get many nods, and I have a feeling Vera Drake is going to surprise us somewhere. Best Actress is a pretty good lock, but maybe screenplay, director or picture?

I think Vera Drake will get two nominations, best actress for Imelda Staunton and original screenplay for Mike Leigh. I think the Academy will steer clear of a best pic. nom. because of the subject of abortion. If they want controversy, they already have Fahrenheit 911 and The Passion Of The Christ in the running.

Don't forget some of the technical categories.

Sky Captain has to get nominated in the Cinematography and the Visual Effects category. How can it not?
