The director's branch will probably be weird and do something like nominate 3 of the Picture frontrunners and then like Nickel Boys and and All I Imagined As Light or revive Guadagnino as make-up for somehow not getting in for Call Me.

I do think at the time it was well received but 9 years was too long to wait. Also ATY and Hemsworth couldn't anchor it. I struggle to find an Avenger that has really anchored a big movie lately on their own outside of MCU. RDJ Sherlock and ScarJo Lucy but films like Dr. Doolittle and Fly Me To the Moon show they aren't reliable draws. Hardy feels like he can still pull people in outside of superhero movies in the right film.

Would be interesting to see if they had brought Theron back how it would have done. It was a bit of a slap in her face to recast it when the only reason anyone cared about Furiosa in the last film was because she was so great in it against Hardy. Their dynamic itself was what was so interesting since in real life there was so much press about how much they disliked each other.

In some ways Furiosa and Lightyear followed similar trajectories. Recast a film with a younger person who has buzz but actually has little to no real bankability or connection to the character. Evans and ATY sort of both fit that mold.

I was underwhelmed by Fury Road back in 2015 but in 2024 found it to be a near perfect film. So complete opposite of the rest of the world apparently lol. Real shame that Furiosa bombed so hard.

But also, Anya is bankable and amazing and not at all comparable to "I'll act in anything for money Christopher Evans" and I refuse to accept otherwise. :P

I mean maybe there just wasn’t demand for a sequel/prequel.

Karla Gascon is getting canceled. Hopefully this is the straw that breaks the camels back and Emilia Perez can go home empty handed

I haven’t seen a lot of the nominees because I’m just not interested, but totally feel this too. SO MANY excellent movies (and more popular ones than what’s being championed) are being either partly shafted or totally ignored.

Its funny, the movie only got awards consideration because voters wanted to make a social justice statement, and now its getting cancelled because of social justice.
Lol!

I still think they go for Saldana but surely they talk themselves out of Perez Best Picture winner. They can just give it to Anora and still feel progressive.

It's not quite as bad when realizing the worst sounding tweet about Hitler and slaves was "mocking" bigot views, but they did have conservative tweets about BLM and immigration which you're not allowed to admit in Hollywood.

Anora lives! Hopefully the momentum will pick back up now and it'll make a Picture/Actress/Screenplay run. Brutalist will win most ovetall, and director, but still just can't see it taking the biggest prize.

These awards were voted on before the controversy so Saldana is not in the clear yet.

Sean Baker wins DGA... mmm ok lol. I still don't think Anora wins BP unless it gets PGA.

Yeah? :funny:

Lets go Team Anora! Dune is obviously the best, but if were gonna make pretend that it doesn't deserve any big awards until Messiah, then Anora is the clear next best choice. A shame more people didn't see it in theaters as I think its pretty accessable.

Anora is the type of movie to lose PGA and DGA and then win SAG and Picture so that it got the first one is probably GG… it was the easy fallback for scared off Emilia Perez voters, and I think with its ending it’s the type of movie you could have conversations about the themes, it seems better the more I think of it.

It seems like it's hard to beat the top movie with "underdog energy" or one that makes them feel good representing a group... Except for during the Oppenheimer year they just went back to 90s/00s style.

La La Land, 1917 and Saving Private Ryan are last three to lose in same position (Gravity tied PGA). If the Brutalist had won PGA and DGA I think it could've been the 1917 but it feels wrong for Anora.
