Re: The Rock
I liked Transformers, Bad Boys, Transformers: ROTF and the Island.
Didn't like DOTM or Armageddon and this is another piece of shit.
Yeah, the San Fran car chase was fantastic but everything on Alcatraz was absolute shite.
I don't have a problem with the whole "one man army" when the character is a badass. Nic Cage's character couldn't find his balls without his pants on.
I need a storyline to be serviceable. This was godawful. How were the criminals going to escape with $100m? Once they got back onto their helicopters, shoot them down. This whole American "we don't negotiate" is such utter crap. There's nothing hard about the decision, if they had just given them the money, everything would be finished. No, the script relies on General Circumsized to cower out and actually not mean it. So many things could have gone wrong, millions of people dead, but no, we don't negotiate even though we can fake the cash and shoot them out of the air once we "transfered" it. Who are we supposed to root for? The FBI director? The one dimensional politicians who only try to save their ass? What happens in the end is everyone's the politicians' puppets once again.

Re: The Rock
wonderful insight Magnus. use the same taste to judge all the shit you dislike then. funny how you find this atypical mindless action flick better than what we get these days, following the crowd then eh? lulz

Re: The Rock
By far Bay's best. Great, compelling, flashy movie-star performances by Connery, Cage, and Harris. Cool concept. Pure fun.

The Rock"All I care about is are you happy with your haircut?" There's action movies, then there's The Rock. It spends half the movie on the San Francisco mainland and the other half on Alcatraz, or it seems like half-half anyway, which is rare for movies to do ( From Dusk Till Dawn does it). It's not the best action movie ever made, but it's one of the best, and firmly in my Top 100 movies ever, and probably in my Top 15 action movies ever. It will be a classic. Connery and Cage work exceedingly well together, and Harris plays the unwilling general quite well. David Morse and the other mercenaries are not just random soldiers either, they actually have personalities and lines of dialogue that make them more than just people for Connery to kill. Cage's girlfriend in this is seriously smoking hot and was a crush of mine for years in my youth. This is one of the most watchable movies ever, with a memorable soundtrack and stylish action. A+

Re: The Rock
Being honest - Connery should have gotten an Oscar nom in vein of Depp for pirates, or RDJ in Tropic Thunder. Every line he delivers is beyond perfection.
"Personally, I think you're a fucking idiot" "Winners go home and fuck the prom queen" "Some snipers gonna pump his ass"
This is a retarded movie, but Bay directs it perfectly and Connery is god. For that, it is an easy A. Not an A+ like Armageddon, but an A.
Michael Bay started his career off RED HOT. It wasnt until Bad Boys 2/The island (pearl harbor was awesome) that he he kinda lost it.

This was pretty good, but I agree with BK - - if they'd thrown in a story with half a brain, this could have been great.

Re: The Rock
Watched this for the first time in many many years.
Just an incredible movie. The music gets you so hyped. Ed Harris is a perfectly reasonable villain. Connery and Cage are fantastic and hilarious. The relentless pacing that never lets you go...
A+
I'll have to watch Bad Boys 2 again to confirm, but I think The Rock has jumped to the top of my Bay list after this.

Little known fact is Tarantino did a rewrite and did a lot of the dialogue

Re: The Rock
It makes sense. The dialogue is very snappy. I heard Sorkin had a go at it too, which fits the war room scenes.

Re: The Rock
Marvel makes decent Michael Bay films. Tell me I'm wrong. They stole the formula and tone from early Bay films (Pearl Harbor aside) and toned it down to be PG-13.

I don't agree with the "decent" part, but they are certainly making the current equivalent to what Michael Bay was doing 15-25 years ago. The difference being that these movies are now 100% aimed at nerdy children (some of which are 35+ years old), while also receiving the critical acclaim of Oscar bait and occasionally being deemed culturally or politically relevant, simply because the protagonist is played by either a woman or by some guy whose great-grandparents happened to live in Ghana. And of course, there's dozens of them, with each of those just serving as an advertisement for the next episode; Michael Bay thankfully never was that prolific.

Re: The Rock
Lol. Make a thread. I didn’t realize the rock would bring out a college thesis that would get a maybe a C-
You guys are both making big leaps. To suggest that any director would Use Pearl Harbor as any influence is already nonsensical. There is nothing original about that film. And it’s awful.

Re: The Rock
People rarely get a chance to kick Marvel while they're down, so they gotta take any and all opportunities to do so.
You could also argue that The Rock and Con Air are just "decent" Die Hard movies. Or you could just enjoy the movies because they're great.

Re: The Rock
I enjoyed Thor and Dr. Strange. People need to start looking at phase 4 as 1.2. Nothing really came together until the first avengers movie. They’re testing the waters again, also they never thought they’d get this far, plus I think they had to really switch gears losing Chadwick.
