The Substance
Quote: The Substance is a 2024 satirical body horror film co-produced, written and directed by Coralie Fargeat. The film stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. An international co-production between the United Kingdom, the United States and France, its plot follows a fading celebrity (Moore) who decides to use a black market drug, a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself (Qualley), unknowingly giving herself horrifying side effects.
The Substance premiered on 19 May 2024 at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in its main competition section, where Fargeat won Best Screenplay. The film was released theatrically in the United Kingdom and the United States by Mubi on 20 September 2024, and was released in France by Metropolitan Filmexport on 6 November 2024. It received critical acclaim, with particular emphasis on Demi Moore’s performance.

Re: The Substance
"The Substance" is a masterpiece. I recognized Coralie Fargeat as a filmmaker to watch after "Revenge," which similarly showcased outstanding sound design and cinematography.
I've never really had an opinion on Demi Moore, but she is fantastic here. Margaret Qualley also delivers a great performance.
The finale is beyond belief. Just when I thought the movie was ending, it kept going, becoming more absurd and nasty—in the best way possible. It's gleefully nuts, and I loved every second of it.
This film is firing on all cylinders. Beyond the stellar cinematography, sound design, and performances, the make-up, editing, and directing are all top-notch—the best I've seen this year.
I love that such an audacious film was given a substantial budget, with every cent visible on screen. The film looks immaculate.
It's unfortunate that the Academy is unlikely to recognize such an "out-there" film, but they should be arrested if this doesn't at least get nominated for make-up, sound, and cinematography. It's hard to imagine this not ranking near the top of the list in those categories for anyone who's seen it.
I love the natural high I get after seeing a truly great film in the theater. "The Substance" is one of those films for me.
While I have many movies left to see, there's a very good chance I've already found my favorite film of the year. I can't wait to see it again.

Pretty wild movie. Not sure the whole finale worked for me but overall I thought it was pretty good. Demi Moore is terrific.

Re: The Substance
First off, horror is one of my least favorite genres. I'm a highly sensitive person, very empathic, deeply impacted by what I see, hear, and feel. So generally I avoid horror films; they're too much, too violent; easy fodder for thoughts, feelings, images, memories and nightmares I don't need to be having.
That said, I'm a film fan and can appreciate good art when I see it. (The Ring remains one of the best 100 movies I've ever seen; Us was phenomenal as well, but too terrifying for a second viewing for me, maybe ever).
I saw The Substance the other night with two friends at a community theater.
This film is incredible. It is so fucking vile and mesmerizing. It's horrifying and somehow hilarious (in a way that makes me want to vomit / cry). It's brilliant and profane and obscene, clever, sexy, and absolutely fucking disgusting. It is also deeply, profoundly disturbing.
We were all shook to the core. Deeply affected. This movie left a mark on me. I can't believe what I've seen. I can't believe this movie exists.
I'm honestly reminded (in a way) of the way I felt after seeing both Parasite (2019) and Everything, Everywhere All At Once (2022) -- knowing I had just seen something profound and impactful, an iconic (and Best Picture worthy) piece of cinema, a work of art. The Substance should win BP too (but won't, at least in this reality).
It's truly an experience.

for those have not seen it yet, disregard my review, the movie's bonkers but nothing special. It's already over-hyped, don't believe the fanfags.

Re: The Substance
btw just curious, do other people not vote in these threads? there are three reviews here, two of them glowing, and the only grade is the "A" I gave it.

Re: The Substance
A new body horror instant classic up there with The Fly. Demi should be nominated for/win Best Actress. Between this and Titane a couple of years ago, I don't know what's in the water in France but French female directors are absolutely kicking ass at this kind of film.
A+

Re: The Substance
Yeah, this is a masterpiece and definitely one of the year's best. It's easily the most memorable movie of the fall season too. A

Re: The Substance
I thought this one was kinda silly and stupid. The only good part is when she first takes it. There's lots of nudity and the "birth" or whatever you wanna call it is gruesome.

Re: The Substance
I feel like it has at least four instances where the film could've ended, but ultimately it ends up saving the best for last and is an absolute blast. I think I'll like it even more the next time I see it.
