How many sec scenes are in this? I wanted to see it but the reviews are making it sound like soft core porn

There are several scenes but they don't last that long. In total probably less than 5 minutes.

The look of the film is at times stunning and the whole cast is terrific. As for the overall film, I thought it was very good but was kind of expecting to like it more. Maybe will give if another viewing down the line.

Definitely a creative story and the actors are superb. It somehow works. The set design and cityscapes are really amazing too.

The audience I was with originally laughed with deep cringe when Mark Ruffalo started talking with his bad accent and then by the end his overacting actually seemed to win the crowd over too.

William Dafoe is incredibly funny throughout this too. He really embraces his role.

Emma Stone is fantastic but I still like Greta Lee from Past Lives the most this past year.

Stone gives one of the best female performances of my lifetime, it would be insulting to Gladstone just to hand her an Oscar over an obvious winner role cleary just cause she’s native (Gladstone is great but the material is just not as strong as Stone’s). I thought Dafoe was excellent giving a layered, funny performance and heart of the movie, I would be ok with him winning BSA. Ruffalo was fun too though ultimately I felt like they don’t make a real effort to use him to explore sexual perversity of humans or something, he’s just there kind of for surface reasons to be an entertaining antagonistic character. I don’t know if the extra 20 minutes with the ex husband arc so they could have a Promising Young Woman style “rah rah we punished the bad man” ending was really necessary and much like Ruffalo, they could have explored his cruelty in a way that’s more meaningful. Whatever arc they could have used the ending for such as saying Bella’s happiness is threatened the more rational gets lost in the attempt to get that happy revenge ending.

Lanthimos is both a good director and an imperfect one. Sometimes it feels like he could chill with the fish eye camera angles and that they’re just there to show off that he’s directing like Tom Hooper putting off angles in his movies, and the movie doesn’t quite get there in terms of screwball fun energy in part due to long less edited scenes. On the whole though is a hell of a unique idea and they get a great physical and psychological character in the middle of it.

Poor Things is an entertaining and memorable experience even if it’s gratuitous sex and questionable central premise keep it from being an enthusiastic recommendation.

Mark Ruffalo is nothing special in this, don’t know why he has Oscar buzz. Willem Dafoe was better.

Emma Stone easily gives her best performance in this. I think it's also the best performance I've seen this year. She's brilliant. The movie starts a little slow and I was worried I would be disappointed by it. Thankfully it gets a lot better once Bella leaves home. By the end I loved it. Not too surprising as I've loved all Yorgos Lanthimos movies. Well, The Killing of a Sacred Deer I just really liked. Not quite loved. But I would like to revisit it.

While it didn't bother me at all, I was surprised just how sexual this was. I had heard it was very "R" rated and yet I wasn't quite expecting this. It's almost pornographic. I live an hour from the theater I went to and this older couple I know through work was sitting right next to me. It was very awkward . On the way out of the theater, they said it was a very gross movie. If they ask me what I thought of it the next time I see them I wonder if they'll think I'm a pervert for liking it . I think my friend and I and another couple in the same row were the only ones laughing. It was a lot of older couples. Not too surprising as it was a matinee. It was surprising they made it through the movie, to be honest. This isn't mainstream at all.

Anyway, this is a great movie. I haven't stopped thinking about it since seeing it on Friday. I look forward to seeing it again.

The fans of this movie online are weird. They love calling everyone who doesn't love it a prude.

I mean, that could be true. But it's such an offbeat film and certainly not for everyone. That's the case with all Yorgos Lanthimos movies. Doesn't necessarily mean someone is a prude for not liking it.

For the first ten-fifteen minutes I was sitting there pretty uncomfortably thinking I made a huge mistake. Emma is being ridiculous and is this pushing the boundaries of being pedo?

Then Dafoe utters the words "I did the only thing that made sense - put the infants brain in the womans body!"

After that everything clicked and a fascinating oddysey ensued. Brilliant movie and a poster child for giving something a chance even if the director hasn't always been your favorite.

And I think they could make a sequel out of this too. I'd watch another 2.5 hours of Bella Baxter becoming a mad scientist.

Saw it again and just ordered the vinyl for the score! Movie worked much more on 2nd viewing. Emma Stone's performance will likely be her best ever, brilliant.

Weird.

My point was that they seem to get a weird joy out of calling people prudes, rather than them not being prudes.

However, realistically most moviegoers would be considered "prudes" as most moviegoers feel uncomfortable during gratuitous sex scenes.

In America. Because for some backwards (religious ingrained) reason we’re more comfortable with violence instead of something natural. It’s why we can’t have erotic thrillers anymore.

If it’s so natural to watch strangers have sex why don’t we all just do it in public?

Movies and art are (among many things) meant to provoke. You should know that by now. You’re on a forum about movies.

The smell? I dunno. I think the sex in this movie is mostly done in a goofy way so as to be as outrageous as possible without actually making people too uncomfortable.

This is the first Lanthimos film I saw and in the beginning it felt a bit weird and I doubted I was going to end up liking it, but the longer the film went on the more I got into it and couldn't help but love it finally.
Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo give amazing performances in front of a great looking late 1900's sci-fi time period. The costumes and visuals are impressive, definitely some of the better cinematography of the year.
Its Frankstein-esque take is well done and despite its slow start, the story ended up gripping me and the film has circled in my mind after.
