Re: The Farewell
Solid but it kinda lacked the emotional punch I thought it'd serve.

Re: The Farewell
Solid film, but more of an unhappy family movie and less of a comedy than I thought. Awkwafina's character is kind of tormented and her parents are not in a great place. Love the difference in persona between Chinese/English lines in her performance. The characters Chinese tradition of treating family as a tradition has virtue, but also is a heavy weight on their back making it hard to enjoy their lives or the last few months of Nai Nai. The ending was really great showing the connection between Billi and her neither of them have very much with others, and the sad goodbye to suddenly English music. I feel like the reveal Nai Nai is still alive in real life after 6 years kind of made it a less powerful, although sadistically I could pretend the film character is separate and died a few months later. Also it's amazing that the real life version apparently still doesn't know she has cancer

I agree that it lacked that emotional punch even though the final goodbye with English music was great. Its a well acted and well crafted movie but I still don't get the high praise, Parasite was way better than this.

Re: The Farewell
I liked this a lot, an interesting story with nice performances, Awkwafina impressed me with her dramatic turn. It has some humorous impulses too and with having lived in China for 14 years, there's a familiarity to the events and settings in the film which I appreciated also. The film isn't grand in scope, in fact it's quite small scale, limited by the personal experiences of the director. But it's very good within that scope, a nice look into some aspects of Chinese culture and just well made really.
