Seriously, one of the most underrated movies ever. Besides the astonishing visual feel of the film (blending star black and white with bright color), it lampoons the '50s sitcom set such as Father Knows Best and My Three Sons directly on-target. The film also manages to raise interesting questions about racism and segregation. The cast is uniformly excellent, from Tobey Maguire to Reese Witherspoon to William H. Macy to Jeff Daniels. Joan Allen is wonderful, and should've received Oscar consideration for this film, but alas, it wasn't to be. Never before has a satire been such a great feel-good film at the same time. A

I agree with Libs, this is one hell of a great film. Part of what makes it great is how easily its greatness can be overlooked. But don't be fooled, this is a brilliant film, one of the 1990s best offerings.

It's on my top-100...
But, yeah. I agree with all of what you three said, but there's also rewatchability. I NEVER get bored of watching Pleasantville.

Also, Pleasantville's score (by Randy Newman) is one of the best ever committed to film, in my opinion.

I was thinking of watching this again this weekend, I haven't seen it in a while.
This is still one of my favorite movies.

Just more liberal propaganda.
Negative 2 stars out of 4.

I watched this again recently and it held up amazingly well. It's visually stunning, beautifully scored, and offers some terrific acting. I especially loved Reese here...she gave two wonderful performances in the late '90s with this and Election.

This one didn't work for me. I think it should have been titled either Obviousville or Boringville...

One of my favorite movies- it features a fantastic cast and it is technically astounding. It has one of the most memorable scores ever, and the film has some very emotional scenes as well.

Too obvious. You know what's going to happen.
I mean, I agree completely with its viewpoint, but that doesn't mean it therefore is a good movie. I thought it dragged quite a bit in places, and seemed like a big budget much too long Twilight Zone episode.
Don Knotts is perfect though.
I gave it a C.

Well, I finally did see it. And yeah, still awesome.
I DID think the film was a little obvious in its morals and stuff (Not as subtle as its unofficial companion film, The Truman Show), but it was still so good in every other aspect, it's easy to overlook. I'd also like to second Libs's comment about the score being one of the best I've heard in a film. And I'm so mad Joan Allen didn't get nominated for this, especially when I see how close she came (She won the BFCA, LAFCA and two other critics awards for the film). Seriously, this was SWELL.
