Quote:
Nightmare Alley is a 2021 American neo-noir psychological thriller film directed by Guillermo del Toro with a screenplay by del Toro and Kim Morgan, based on the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham. The film features an ensemble cast including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn. It is the second feature film adaptation of Gresham's novel, following the 1947 version. The film focuses on Stan Carlisle (Cooper), an ambitious carny, who hooks up with a corrupt psychiatrist, Dr. Lilith Ritter (Blanchett), who proves to be more dangerous than he is.

Del Toro serves as a producer on the film, alongside J. Miles Dale and Cooper. Del Toro first announced development of the project in December 2017, his first film since the Academy Award-winning The Shape of Water (2017). Frequent collaborator Dan Laustsen serves as the film's cinematographer, while Nathan Johnson replaces Alexandre Desplat as the film's composer. Principal photography began in January 2020 in Toronto, Ontario, but was shut down in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production resumed in September 2020 and concluded that December.

Nightmare Alley had its world premiere at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on December 1, 2021.

I thought this was fantastic. Dark, twisted and incredibly entertaining - some of the sequences are unforgettable here and the imagery on display is just gorgeous. This should win almost every technical Oscar, the atmosphere is incredible and the score is great. Bradley Cooper delivers one of his best performances and is equally matched by a deliciously villainous Cate Blanchett. I think fans of Crimson Peak will really respond to this one. One of the best movies of the year for sure. A

Not top tier Del Toro but I enjoyed it. It's gorgeously filmed. Cate Blanchett is great. Everyone else is good enough. Nobody else has a showy, scenery chewing role though.

I saw this again today theatrically as I wanted to catch it before it left. It's still hypnotic and brilliant, IMO.

This was kind of boring till the end when people started dying. Not my cup of tea, though it was at least pretty to look at.

This felt like a Netflix movie. The photography is gorgeous and there's a ton of money pumped into the ensemble cast, who are all at the top of their game. Yet it is also just so slow and indulgent. GDT really needed someone to tell him "hey if you put the scene where Cate Blanchett interupts them at the start of the movie, then flashback to the circus, the story will have a ton more momentum and you won't risk boring the audience to death before the interesting stuff starts to happen." But nobody told him that and Nightmare Alley just dilly dallys along with its glacial linear pacing until the action finally picks up at the 115 (out of 150) minute mark. One hundred and fifteen minutes. If that sounds like a lot to you, don't watch this movie.

Also,

1. Pan's Labyrinth
2. Hellboy 2
3. Crimson Peak
4. The Devil's Backbone

5. Cronos
6. Hellboy
7. Blade II
8. The Shape of Water

9. Pacific Rim
10. Nightmare Alley

Congrats to Pacific Rim for escaping the basement! Though that movie still kinda stinks too. :P

But even a stinky Del Toro movie is worth watching (for me.) His style is undeniable.

Also also, the best part about Nightmare Alley are the colors. Watching this in black and white would be a cinematic crime.
