Re: Promising Young Woman
The Little Things is more my kind of film I guess, but the reasons you mention have nothing to do it. And Promising Young Woman, while it works for the film to have Carey murdered at the end, the tone of the film didn't make me get very emotionally involved with it. And it may be small but it irked me that there's a video of "that event", but it's not known about before. It's just a good movie and that's it.

The genre, I generally tend to enjoy serious thrillers more than other kinds of films.

This was my #1 movie of the year with a sugar coated, lipstick adorned bullet.
Sincerely hoping Carey Mulligan wins the Oscar.

Sincerely hoping Carey Mulligan wins the Oscar. She definitely deserves it. This really is a modern classic. I hope it's audience expands over the coming months.

I'm hoping Best Buy does a steelbook or something and I don't have to own the ugly artwork. I do understand them not going with the first poster (even if it's great), but the second one released would have been a very nice cover.

Every scene is dripping with tension and style. Right up my alley and the ending was the right way to go. No one should walk out of this film unscarred.
A+

Re: Promising Young Woman
I wanna compare it to films like Kill Bill and Drive, but it really is a unique experience. Carey is rightfully getting a ton of praise, but Emerald Fennell deserves just as much. The supporting cast too. Even the people who only get one scene were expertly cast. McLovin doing coke and explaining his novel had me rolling. The one scene I could do without is the spit coffee. I almost threw up. Very gross even before covid.

Re: Promising Young Woman
I read that this was originally supposed to end at the burning. I'm very glad they didn't and Emerald added on an extra few scenes. Maybe it would have fit better thematically, but nihilism is so overdone in media these days. And if you really wanted that kind of ending, the guy was a rich white doctor with a pretty strong self-defense case. I would like to believe both Al and Schmidt faced the consequences for their actions, but in the real world there would (at best) be a 50/50 chance of justice.

Finally watched this and didn't know anything about it ahead of time. It really is an impressive directorial debut and performance from Mulligan and leaves a lasting impact.

Re: Promising Young Woman
Really loved Mulligan in this. The rest of the characters are not as complex as her though other than maybe Alfred Molina. I get its nihilistic view on men is the point but even the parent characters or friends writing I have some mixed feelings about. The ending was great. Overall very good.

Re: Promising Young Woman
I still like Soul more (maybe Palm Springs too,) but this was a very worthy Best Picture winner. Hopefully we match its excellence with our choice this year!
