Quote:
Starred Up is a 2013 British prison crime drama film directed by David Mackenzie and scripted by Jonathan Asser. The film stars Jack O'Connell, Ben Mendelsohn, and Rupert Friend. The film is based on Asser's experiences working as a voluntary therapist at HM Prison Wandsworth, with some of the country’s most violent criminals. The title is a term used to describe the early transfer of a criminal from a Young Offender Institution to an adult prison.

I enjoyed it and the performances were strong but this was ridiculously over hyped.

Starred Up

Purposeless English prison drama. It just reaffirms my belief that people in prison are just pieces of trash, unintelligent, and so full of anger and hate that they're no good to the world. Jack O'Connell's performance was good, but this is no surprise as he is basically a hooligan anyway. All he can play are lower-class/thug roles like convicts and soldiers. I was surprised to see Rupert Friend in the film, and I thought that casting him as the role of the therapist was a bit strange. He's too associated with Homeland to be taken seriously as anything but a hit man for hire. The runtime went very quickly, and it kept me engaged throughout. It was an acceptable prison film, but really nothing special at all.

It does not reinvent the wheel, but damn, this is a damn good, intense film with terrific performances by Jack O'Connell and Ben Mendelsohn, whose uneasy father-son-relationship makes this film. I loved it uterly up until the over-the-top finale (even asshole prison guards probably wouldn't go that far). It is the best prison-flick I have seen in many years, even topping Refn's Bronson.

Just caught this on TV and thought it was great, the film has a very good groove and I love the performances from Mendelsohn and O'Connell. Especially the latter, just great, and I think I just have a bit of a thing for prison films too, there's something scary and fascinating about a locked up life and I think this film brings a well executed dimension of that to the screen too. MacKenzie already showed me he's a talented filmmaker with Hell or High Water, one of the best film I've ever seen. This is not quite that level, but one of the best films of the year nonetheless.
