An otherwise good movie is elevated by his performance. You have to buy into his character and his relationship with Matt Damon for the movie to work. I don't want to oversell it in his passing, and it's honestly not my favorite performance of his, but it is the quintessential Robin role. He's funny and he's serious, two sides he portrayed brilliantly in other films separately.

Re: Good Will Hunting
This is an absolutely perfect film. Everyone delivers, from the actors in front of the camera to Gus Van Sant behind it. It nicely blends grit and sentimentality; they complement rather than undermine one another. And it has so many Great Scenes. Scenes which are intense or poignant or infinitely quotable.

I tend to sway closer to Lecter's claims of "overrated!" than anyone else's "favorite movie ever!". It was good, I enjoyed myself, but it felt more, to me, like everyone trying too hard. It didn't look natural or organic to me. It's like they said "Let's make this look authentic" rather than "Let's make this feel authentic".
I do like Matt, Ben and Minnie as well in the movie. I think there is solid acting on display from all involved. It's just the little cheesy moments that make me groan rather than swell with emotion. And that part at the end where Ben knocks on the door and Matt isn't there anymore and he does that "Ah gosh, he finally left this place!" smile is almost enough to ruin the movie.
But that's why personal opinions are great.
And honestly, I'd much rather see Robin have an Oscar for at least three superior roles, but he does still make the film. I'm content that if he has an Oscar, it's for this role.
To go against any criticisms I shared, try to watch that and not feel a little emotional for him. Too rarely does an actor look that proud of himself and not look arrogant in the process.
