The Blue Umbrella, the short before Monsters University, is amazing. Absolutely AMAZING. Hell, I'd not even hesitate to call it groundbreaking and a surefire frontrunner for the Best Animated Short Oscar. The animation quality in it is astonishing.

Oh my god! I agree 1000 times over. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just WOW! The best part of going to see this movie.

Monsters University was decent. It has nothing on the original but it's not bad. Honestly, the funniest gag for me was when the mom said she'd just be in the vehicle listening to her tunes and then turns the music on and it's like death metal. That was really funny.

6/10 (B-)

I really enjoyed it. It's not the best Pixar movie ever made and it runs a little long but it's sweet, funny and entertaining. B+

It's cute. Mike's arc (and I hesitate to even call it that) and the laughs are what saved the movie for me. But this is lower-tier Pixar. How many times are we going to get a college movie where there has to be a competition of some sort in order for the main characters to stay on campus? Animal House perfected it and Old School breathed new life into it, but now Pixar is resorting to it? They either need new writers to breath some life into the company, or they need to give the old guys (Bird, Stanton, etc.) a nice payday and get them working again. These new guys are verging on "hack" status. Only so many of their movies will get by just on being cute before audiences will begin to turn.

I really enjoyed this. Not among Pixar's best, but I still loved it. Charlie Day's character had me ROLLING during the sea urchin? scene. "You do NOT want to touch these!" "I wanna touch it"

Oh, so... The Blue Umbrella.

How. I mean. Good lord. Beautiful animation. I honestly thought it was filmed. Unbelievable.

Post Re: Monsters University
Pixar’s last few years have been disappointing. Cars 2 is a flat out terrible film and Brave is fine, but by the standards of Pixar’s previous original films, fine was underwhelming. Monsters University fits into the Brave profile of a good film, that Pixar’s high standards makes look worse for its near-irrelevance.

Monsters University makes the decision to pay homage to college movies with the fraternity competition, underdog plot that dominates the film - except animated and with monsters. The tricky part about this homage, is it left them viable to be put in a creative box. If chasing after parodying a genre, it leaves little room to stretch its legs with their own plot, or one greater lending itself to character development. The film does try to develop the Mike and Sullivan relationship, including their heart to heart at the end, but one wonders if chasing after a gimmick by making an animated college film, left their hands tied.

Once committed to the fraternity plot, where it really needed to excel is in comedy. But its gags are more cute than hilarious. It lacks the comedic meal ticket that Despicable Me 2’s Minions provided. There are memorable moments such as the librarian sequence, the scaring Finals of the competition and making the adults scream in the cabin, while Billy Crystal, John Goodman and the voice actors for the other frat brothers, are game. But most of the humor and plot developments, feel as if they could have been written by Dreamworks or another animation company.

Monsters University is a better than average animated film, but neither its character development or humor stands out enough to make it a memorable film in the long run.

The short before the film Blue Umbrella, is more interesting than the feature. It’s shocking that the entire sequence is animated, instead of incorporating live-action filming. More importantly, the short contains a spark and heart that Pixar hasn’t been able to translate to its features since Toy Story 3. There is clearly talent involved in the company, but they need to evaluate what went wrong in Cars 2, Brave and Monsters University compared to earlier films and whether this is the the best they can do, or settling for just good enough.

MU is harmless but forgettable and never very funny. The Blue Umbrella is annoying. It was like a snarky parody of a Pixar short.

I agree, the Blue Umbrella short wasn't all that great. Might be one of their weaker efforts. To be honest, it felt like a remake of that Paper short Disney did last year that rolled before Wreck it Ralph

Sometimes, even embarassing. "Harry Potter gone wacky and gonzo - and not quite wacky and gonzo enough" as I read on RT.

Seriously, I was shocked at how pathetic MU was. I have yet to see Cars 2, but I guess this represents a suitable competition for the title of 'Worst Pixar'. Also, an insult to Monsters, Inc.

4,5/10 (or D)

Yes. Those.

Art was fantastic. Almost entirely because of Charlie Day.

I'll add more, Squishy's mom, Dan Carlton scenes, animation on Dean Hardscrabble, visit to Monsters Inc., soundtrack, the brave and risky message at the end of the film, among others

No other animated movie this year has given us too many great moments

Every moment from Art (i.e. Charle Day). Mike/Sullys conversation at the lake.

Looks like Art was great "almost entirely because of Charlie Day", so I couldn't enjoy the 'greatness' there. And that conversation is great only if you compare it to something like the Grug/Guy conversation in the Croods.

I've re-watched most of Pixar's films in the past month and definitely agree with anyone saying Monsters University is sub-par, especially by Pixar standards. Every Pixar film has a few very memorable characters/moments, those that make them greater than their competitors, but recently... not so much.

There aren't any characters or moments in Monsters University or Cars/Cars 2 that'll have me interested in seeing them again this year, in 5 years, 10 years, etc.

Monsters Inc. is one of my favorite Pixar films and seeing these characters again was a lot of fun. This is a good follow-up. Yeah it doesn't go for the hard-hitting emotions or broader classic Pixar feel but it doesn't have to. This is just another fun time with these characters and it works. This film shows that Pixar will do just fine with it's sequels and Cars 2 is merely a fluke for them. Also, that they can make very enjoyable films whose goal isn't to beat out the previous film the studio made.
