Re: This Must Be the Place
This is wonderful. When photographs of Sean Penn as an aging goth musician reminiscent of the Cure's Robert Smith were first posted online, an amused and mystified reaction ensued. Understandable, but the role is in fact a gift for the great actor, so often cast in confrontational, volcanic masculine roles, but here given the chance to show a softer, lighter, more melancholic side. It is a delightful, macabre, and magnetic performance; one of the year's best. This is the type of charming and stylized hero Tim Burton created before he discovered autopilot. The unusual plot, which finds the retired vocalist traveling through America in a search of a German war criminal, results in a potent blend of poignant drama, unconventional humor, and an almost mythic depiction of the U.S. landscape.
