Far from Heaven

Quote:
Far from Heaven is a 2002 drama film written and directed by Todd Haynes and starring Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, and Patricia Clarkson.

The film tells the story of Cathy Whitaker, a 1950s housewife, living in suburban Hartford as she sees her seemingly perfect life begin to fall apart. It is done in the style of a Douglas Sirk film (especially 1955's All That Heaven Allows and 1959's Imitation of Life), dealing with complex contemporary issues such as race, gender roles, sexual orientation and class.

The film was nominated for several Academy Awards: for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Julianne Moore), Best Original Screenplay (Todd Haynes), Best Cinematography (Edward Lachman), and Best Original Score (Elmer Bernstein).

The best movie of 2002.

Works as thrilling, moving melodrama, works as a brilliant Douglas Sirk homage. Works as a window through which we can our own prejudices reflected. Works as a reminder that as much as things have changed, a lot has stayed the same.

This is a wonderful, inspiring movie, with some of the best cinematography and by far the best score of the last few years.

Watch it. Watch it. Watch it.

Julianne Moore makes it all look so damn effortless. What a performance.

Best movie of 2002. Or pretty close with The Hours.

One of my all time favorites. I still can not get over its enormous snub for a Best Picture nod and Julianne Moore's win for Best Actress.

One of the best movies of 2002. The movie is not only beautiful to look, but it is also very poignant. Julianne Moore gives an amazing performance, while Quaid is also quite strong. The movie was robbed of a Best Picture nomination. A

One of my top 3 from 2002.

Can't really say anything that hasn't been said...Julianne Moore is absolutely amazing in it.

I have it sitting in the top 5 or so, as well. Needless to say, I loved it. But I haven't watched it in quite some time...I think I'll go change that.

I loved how the film was a homage to 50s films, but at the same time took a big shit all over 50s values :P

A slightly overrated film, though this was a tad better than In the Bedroom. I just found it to be a little too short. I think it touched upon interesting topics and issues, but didn't went into them deep enough. The acting by Quaid and, in particular, by Moore is splendid. I'm surprised that Quaid missed out on a nom.

Stylistically, the film was top-notch. Todd Haynes obviously knows his stuff and the 50s setting looked great. Cinematography, art direction, costumes..all was right on. I also loved thge way the credits were designed, á la older films. It's just, as I said, that it could have been "deeper". I wasn't bored for a second and it couldn't have hurt the film to be a bit longer.

This is damn impressive. Beautiful production design and color work, amazing score, all around superb performances. The characters were surprisingly refreshing, there's a lot of emotion and believable arcs here. The conversations and facial gestures shared, it's all completley nailed.

I think my favorite character in the movie is Frank... Dennis Quaid was insanely snubbed here. Really all the performances are fabulous here because they walk a fine line between playing up the 50s Sirk stereotypes and still coming off as real people. Everyone in the movie is completley real.

I quite enjoyed it.

4.5/5

Gaaaccckk! Can't find my original review, but I enjoyed it, but didn't love it.

Fantastically accurate yet dreamlike old school setting and mood though!

Hehe, yea.

Superb film - not only eloquently executed by all players, but gorgeous! I'm not sure I've ever seen a film with as much texture and color. Almodovar can't touch this shit.

Cant touch it visually? And why Almodovar? Did I miss some connection between the two?

Coincidentally, I just pulled this film out from the piles a few days ago...didn't watch it all, but it was nice to revisit some of it. It's a great film.

Great (very beautiful and poignant) movie, but I prefer Haynes in Velvet Goldmine/I'm Not There mode vs. Far From Heaven/Mildred Pierce mode.

Most of the films that this was homaging were already shitting on common 50s values. I think I prefer the real Sirk to the re-enginered via tom haynes sirk, this was remarkably similar to All that Heaven Allows, yet it was just as beautiful and a remarkably satisfying update, I love it.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Amazing film! One of 2002's best for sure. Really deserved a Best Picture nomination. Julianne Moore is at her best here, which is saying something since she's always great. Very beautiful film.

And yet, I bet half of the posters in this thread do not know what that movie is.

So? How does this make your obvious statement any less obvious?
