The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Bridge on the River KwaiQuote: The Bridge on the River Kwai is a 1957 British World War II film by David Lean based on the novel The Bridge over the River Kwai by French writer Pierre Boulle. The film is a work of fiction but borrows the construction of the Burma Railway in 1942–43 for its historical setting. It stars William Holden, Alec Guinness, Jack Hawkins, and Sessue Hayakawa.
In 1997, this film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress National Film Registry.

It's a bit slow moving, but it packs one hell of a final punch. Alec Guinness is great, and as usual so is William Holden.

Saw it for the first time today. Great start, reaLLy sLow middLe and okay ending. The performances were great though and IMO, it presented a very engaging interpretation of the situations during the WWII.

Re: The Bridge on River Kwai
yep a lot of David Lean's movie suffer from the "BOOM, Quiet, small bang" problem...
The movies start of with lots of exictment, then slow done and then finish with a mediocre ending.
Lawrence of Arabia was an expection. The best parts are in the middle.

One of my top 10 best ending's ever. A stunning film that has stood the test of time and in a way encapsulates upper crust British imperialism and its loss of power like no other.
I adore this film.

A classic war film that is down beaten by a need to find an American hero (in a British film?) a midst what could have been simply a POW movie only.

Re: The Bridge on the River Kwai
Holden's character feels extraneous, but the rest is golden. The ending is sublime; Manny is wrong, as usual.

Yeah. Brief Encounter is better than both this and Lawrence of Arabia, though.

Watching it again. As per some of the comments, so far, Holden is needed to show the contrast between the British and Americans.

Re: The Bridge on the River Kwai
With movies like this, I do wonder whether they are really the greatest of all the time, or were they just the Avatars of their day - blockbusters that the people who made those AFI lists just happen to be nostalgia for.
Not to say this was bad. Alec Guiness is every bit as good as advertised. The production is magnificent and the music sticks with you. I just didn't really need the subplot (or main plot since the actors name was top of the poster) of the American who breaks out and then breaks back in. There was plenty of conflict and drama during the construction of the bridge itself and Guinness' increasing obsession with it. Could have easily cut 30-40 minutes off this film and made it much more digestible. As is, it just kinda drags for way too long in the middle before getting to the explosive ending.
I'll give it a 6.5/10. An important piece of cinema history. Superb craftmanship held down by poor pacing.

Re: The Bridge on the River Kwai
The whole American subplot really does bog this down. But it is still a great movie. Haven’t seen it in a while, but I am hard pressed not to give it an A
