Idiocracy

Quote:
Idiocracy is a 2006 American satirical science fiction comedy, directed by Mike Judge and starring Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph and Dax Shepard.

The film tells the story of two ordinary people who are taken into a top-secret military hibernation experiment which goes awry, and awaken 500 years in the future. They discover that the world has degenerated into a dystopia where advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism run rampant and dysgenic pressure has resulted in a uniformly stupid human society devoid of intellectual curiosity, social responsibility and coherent notions of justice and human rights.

Despite its lack of a major theatrical release, the film has achieved a cult following.

Simply awesome.

This dystopian sci-fi rom-com is the heart of a biting satirical indictment of the (il)logical outcome of today's social and political trends. Mike Judge takes no prisoners in this blackest of comedies that is so disturbingly true, that it's own distributor has attempted to keelhaul it's theatrical release.

I'd read nothing about it, except that the story featured a time machine, and left the theatre agape at the brilliance of this film.

Idiocracy is locked onto my 2006 top ten list.

9.5 out of 5.

(A few reviews have finally started showing up on RottenTomatoes -- check out the raves. Or better yet -- don't read anything about this new cult classic and just go see it. Find your way to one of the few theatres that are reluctantly screening it, and then 50 years from now, you can brag to your grandchildren that you were one of the lucky few to see it on the big screen in it's original run...)

This movie's whole release "strategy" is an amazing story in film history developing right now!

It's not too late! It's still screening this week, and the total US gross is up to $322,762! Go see it, while you can...

Sad.

Oh well, see you all back here when the DVD's released...

Yikes I agree with Bradley.

I have no idea why Fox dumped this movie because despite the low testing scores that were rumoured this is a richly enjoyable satire on the dumbing down of Western society. Wilson is a affable likable main lead and the wonderfully inventive world Mike Judge has created (a freaky vision of crass consumerism welded with the mind of a 5 year old) had me spotting enjoyable touches thru-out. I mean how can't one like a film were the people have become so dumb that think the USA and the Nazi's fought World War 2 with Dinosaurs.

Funny for about 25 minutes then tiresome as it's always the same type of humor.

It was amusing but I would have really liked to see the finished product, not the heavy narration edited-on-a-computer cut we ended up with.

I read a bit about Mike Judge being rushed to complete it, but I saw it twice and it seemed complete to me. The short running time was just right for this particular movie. It is a sci-fi comedy classic. The really surprising thing is that a movie as subversive as this gets financed and made in the first place.

I'll betcha in 10 years when it's a cult classic, people will be climbing over each other to say how they recognized it the first time they saw it...

I wouldn't really consider it subversive really. I would be interested to see why you thought so.

I did like the touch of the clothing though, that all the clothing was that sports material (rayon? some sort of satin?).

Fucking brilliant. Now, this, people, is a brilliant satire of America. I'd say it almost tops Borat, and it hits way too close to home in some areas. Granted, the ending felt like it was just slapped on there and there were some scenes that just dragged on, but overall...wow. Fucking brilliant. A

How come I have never heard of this flick and somehow this little gem sliped by so unnoticed in the general public? When I saw it in the videoself it said it was by Mike Judge so I gave it a try and the satire is done so well and somewhat pretty true in general but with overblown portions. Thats how you make a social point and a satire about it. It speaks very true of how the hell Epic Movie became number 1 and how MTV is becoming more and more stupid. It makes the movie so much funnier because it was pretty true in general

Heh, I enjoyed myself. I felt that Judge probably could've gone farther with his satire and message, other than the opening and a couple moments past that, most of the film was laughing at this dumb society... But I liked it.

I agree that there were nice touches throughout. It was the details and creation of the world itself, and not the overall storyline, that made me laugh most. Like the name of the hospital being built too big for the building, so it has to curve down... loved that. #1 movie being "Ass", the dinosaurs, the news channel, the president being a professional wrestler, etc. I also loved when they blew up his car, and the general action movie voice that was everywhere from the fast food place to the news tv.

I feel that it could've been a bit longer. I would've liked if they got the crop realization maybe halfway through the movie, then dove into the term with Not Sure as president, how he handles everything.

Overall I thought it was a strikingly accurate look at where society is going, but it misses classic status. Mostly just enjoyable.

Utterly stupid and inane attempt at satire that falls short not only due to its largely idiotic humour, but because of the poor filmmaking on display here. The whole film feels like a direct to video mess. The visuals are occasionally interesting but so poorly realized that the film loses all credibility. The concept is intriguing but, again, poorly realized. The story is nothing short of terrible and the acting ranges from bland to downright awful. There are a few, brief glimpses of genius, so I laughed occasionally, but, on the whole, this was a great big disappointment.

Bump

This movie wins my award for film that I came out 'really liking', then thought about it for a couple weeks, and realized it deserved a much higher grade than I gave it... I don't recall anything growing on me as much without a second viewing as this film has.

More and more I think it's the most accurate and scary vision of our future that has ever been portrayed on film.

I look at the films that have topped the box-office so far this year(Stomp the Yard, Epic Movie, The Messengers, Norbit, and Ghost Rider), I look at society going absolutely fucking nuts over the death of a gold-digging whore who was only famous for being just that, I look at how no teenagers read books anymore, I look at how dumb hip-hop is dominating music and 95% of their videos are endless naked woman, and I am saddened at how this man may be telling the future.

DTV cheap film or not, I honestly believe this is our generation's 1984 vision. Poor production, acting, screenplay, jokes, it doesn't matter, the film needs to be seen.

A bunch of great concepts in search of a decent movie. It has decent rewatchability though, and a wonderfully black, accurate viewpoint on the world.

I rented this last night. I haven't been to a movie rental place in what feels like 87 years, but my friend has a part time job at one, and free movies never hurt anyone.

Anyway, this is pretty funny (if not downright hilarious) for around twenty solid minutes, but it loses steam at an alarming rate and before you know it you're just kind of waiting for it to end. There are a lot of great ideas here, but Mike Judge just can't sustain them.

This movie was great. It is definitely a B movie but it is fun and some of the satire is understated. The narrator telling you what is going on even though you can see what is happening on the screen is a great example of how movies like 300 do the exact same thing. I have to say the Humor gets tiring after a while and some scenes dragged on and the narrator misses the mark a few times it was a great commentary on intelligence and consumerism.

Idiots just do stuff without meaning and smart people overthink stuff..I think many people overlook at how much this movie pokes at smart people. From the start it mocks an overtly complicated birthing procedure considered by smart people. It mocks their lack of life where the idiots just do stuff but the world falls apart. Smart people focused on the wrong issues and Dum people just let the smart people handle the issues. What is left in the end is a world where the remenants of the smarter people fall apart in dissarray. All the technology is their and it is all push button so any idiot could use it without even knowing what it is.

This movie does seem rushed and definitely could of used some tweaking before it was released. However my guess is that FOX studios wasn't happy with the content of the film and probably cut the budget so the movie couldn't quite get finished fully. I read that FOX sat on the movie for a year before release and than released it for contractual responsibility which si a shame.

Office space did not test well but it didn't require the budget this did.

B one of the best of 2006
