Quote:
Small Soldiers is a 1998 American action/science fiction film directed by Joe Dante starring Gregory Smith and Kirsten Dunst. The film revolves around two teenagers (played by Smith and Dunst), who get caught in the middle of a war between two factions of sentient action figures, the Gorgonites and the Commando Elite.

Critical reception of the film was mixed. Critics complimented the film's special effects, but criticized some of the darker aspects of the film, which had been marketed to a young audience.

Well, I liked it lots when I was a kid. If I saw it nowadays though, it'd probably seem horrendeous.

i liked it a lot when i saw it a long while ago, and i saw it again recently and i still liked it. I can't remember what the beasties were called (argonauts? gorgariths?) but i find them rather annoying as they are useless and a couple of them seem pretty retarded. I like Gregory Smith and Kirsten Dunst though, and the parents are entertaining enough (though Gregory Smith's dad in the movie is living in some fantasy land. who the fuck would want the toys that he was selling in his shop? how boring). i quote a few lines from the movie semi-regularly, but the one that has always stuck with me was the "I'm not a ma'am!" for whatever reason. i thought that was really funny.

Phil Hartman's last role, and it was one of his more memorable, had a good cast and was the Dark side of Toy Story more or less, I enjoyed it, and is a fun film to watch with the family. Because what child has never imagined that toys fight each other.

I remember liking it much more when i was younger, now its mostly boring with a few nice creative scenes, they should have made the film entirely about the small soldiers.

While it is not flawless by any means and defies all logic, I find this movie IMMENSLY enjoyable and very rewatchable. I have seen it several times by now and it never gets boring for me. It reminds me a whole lot of Joe Dante's earlier Gremlins and its sequel. It certainly has the same atmosphere. It's just a very fun flick.

Joe Dante needs to finally make another real film. He hasn't made one since Looney Tunes: Back in Action. Gremlins, its sequel, Small Soldiers, Innerspace and his Twilight Zone segment were all a whole lot of fun.

Well, we quote each other so much it's an easy mistake! But don't you too agree with me and Thegun?

Post Re: Small Soldiers
I loved this as a 12 year old. Watched it yesterday and it was still charming but it more so just highlighted how innocent and not mature I was at that age, that I could enjoy a kids film so much. But that's what happened, so there we go. I was fascinated with the idea of toys coming to life, much like my fascination with the Indian in the Cupboard and Jingle All the Way. Now I look back and see that my childhood was a true childhood. I'm glad I didn't grow up so fast.

Anyway, as for the film; it's good fun for kids. My son liked it. But even he was kind of confused how none of the characters just kicked the toys out of the way. It's a fairly big hole in the concept of the movie. It's unfortunate that Dante had planned to make a darker story for teenagers but the top brass ordered him to make it more for young children. You can kind of see both directions in the finished product. It's also interesting how the film is called Small Soldiers, and they are the bad guys. Films with goodies versus baddies are usually named after the goodies, so as a young boy I was rooting for Chip Hazard, or at least thought he was cool. I suppose it's because this film comes from a time that, despite not being that long ago, it seems it was long enough ago to have not been plagued by over-analysis of the marketing department.

I also only found out yesterday that Phil Hartman died in, like, 1999. I had wondered why I didn't see him in anything for 20 years. He was a true gem. I also learned that Christina Ricci and Sarah Michelle Gellar lent their voices.

I've never seen this but have been meaning to.

Regarding Phil Hartman - it was big news when he was murdered but you may have been too young at the time. I was a fan of his comedy and he was in News Radio at the time which was a show I enjoyed. Sad.

Phil Hartman was sad indeed. Many still blame Andy Dick for his death.

Phil's wife (who eventually murdered him) had kicked her coke habit and was in control of herself for a decade until Andy Dick peer pressured her into restarting it at a party. That began her final descent and ended up with Phil dead 5 months later.
