A fact that makes you a unique troll.
They're EXTREMELY similar films, yet one is more lighthearted and better acted with a better story. (Transformers)

Re: Pacific Rim
Shia's heroes journey is a lot funner and more relatable than whatever Charlie Dunnam's journey is. Millions of people must have died in the six years of Kaiju attacks. Yet we are supposed to feel bad that his brother, a soldier, died in combat? Get the fuck out of here. This is war.
And that is his entire character.

Indeed. But maybe after ?? years, they had gotten used to it? But then... why would ANYONE live within a hundred miles of the coast? Move. Away. You. Idiots. Twelve years. http://pacificrim.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline

Re: Pacific Rim
You realize its supposed to be homage to all those Godzilla movies. The Japanese in there didn't seem all depressed about it. In fact, they kept pointing in the air and said "Godzilla!!" when hes supposed to destroy his adversary like Mechagodzilla or Gamra.

Re: Pacific Rim
And its an unfair comparison to generalize his character. I don't want the movie to spend half of the film explaining the character's motivation or childhood like you guys want it

Re: Pacific Rim
I can complain about what I wanted from the film. Just like when everyone complained about what they wanted from MoS.

It makes no sense. You rebuild, and for twelve years, your city gets destroyed again. Just move away until they're all gone.

Re: Pacific Rim
The key difference imho, between Pacific Rim and Transformers was that the former has a simple, earnest, melodramatic story, while the latter had an incoherent and juvenile story. Story rules in my universe. However, I also agree with del Toro on the aesthetic of the film when he responds to criticism that Pacific Rim is a copy of Transformers... Quote: "There is an operatic quality to Pacific Rim in terms of size and scope, del Toro says. In the film, the robots are as tall as 25-story buildings — much larger than the Autobots of Bay's franchise -- and they take on invading alien monsters.
'The fights don't occur in well-lit, supercool, car commercial-looking environments,' del Toro says. 'They occur in the middle of a raging sea storm or in a savage snowstorm. They happen in a universe that is incredibly saturated.'"

Re: Pacific Rim
"Our robots are bigger and grittier" - Del Toro
Also, incoherent and juvenile? The Transformers story is just as simple as the Pacific Rim story.

Re: Pacific Rim
The first Transformers was significantly better than Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim, however, was better than the TF-sequels.

The coolest robot in PR was the Asian one and they barely use it. That three-arm shit was dope. Bardley's makes a cool point about the occurance of fight scenes. I could see why PR was more expensive because the creation of the water scenes has been expensive as shown in most movies involving some sort oceanic FX (Titanic,Waterworld, POTC:AWE)

The last fight was the biggest issue for me - set underwater, it never looked like it actually was set underwater.

Re: Pacific Rim
Everything is so unmemorable, from the design of the creatures to the way the fights unfold. del Toro loses his magic entirely on this scale.

Re: Pacific Rim
I quite enjoyed it for it's big screen scale and effects. The story and characters are passable at best. But I enjoyed it for what it is.
Is it horrible that at the end when the #5 comes through that I wanted Godzilla to make an appearance and just start wreaking havoc. I mean, he could save Earth and humanity by defending his underwater home from the invading Kaiju, or be the final nail in humanity's coffin joining his fellow Kaiju, and it would be awesome either way.
Anyway, B+ for big screen fun. Though I would have liked some daytime fights on land.

Didn't know where to post, but looks like Part 2 is in the works, at least in del Toro's brain http://www.movies.com/movie-news/guille ... im-2/12959

Re: Pacific Rim
350m WW is fine, but most of it will come from OS; If most of the money had been made in the US, sequel would have been a sure thing

Re: Pacific Rim
3/10 -> D-
This was spectacularly bad. Laughable throughout. The characters are air thin, no development whatsoever. The plot is completely underused and the whole movie is completely predictable and filled with regular high profile summer popcorn movie cliches. It gets annoying very fast.
Oh and it's horribly filmed. I can't believe this was done by Del Toro. It's actually offensive to release this after El laberinto del fauno and very fun Hellboy's.

Re: Pacific Rim
This was like any other summer blockbuster this year (except STID)....average...I will rate it 6-6.5/10 while MOS will be 6.5-7/10.IM3 will be 6-6.5. What a terrible year.
