So I rewatched this...
As far as shallow disaster movies go, this one really is the best. I *shouldn't* care for the characters, but I really do. The score is wonnnnnderful (and half original - a first for James Horner) and the acting isn't so bad. I really like this movie. Armageddon is a diverting trip, but Deep Impact is superior. It's much more personal and effecting.

The Core was as great a disaster-comedy movie as Deep Impact was a disaster-drama movie. Both awesome films and both severely under-rated...

But this movie was more realistic in terms of the emotion displayed and not a bunch of oil rig workers pretending to be astronauts from 2 weeks training and dodging debris the size of a house while trying to land on this thing to blow it up.. I find it amazing that not 1 piece of debris hit their ship on the way to land on this thing cause in real life, they would've been toast..

 Re: Deep Impact
What would you do if the world was about to end? Deep Impact answers this question in the most humane way possible, and that's what makes it so memorable: it manages to be compelling and entertaining without loud action sequences, something extremely rare in disaster films. It's very emotional (even to the point of nearly making me cry), you feel for the characters despite none of them getting that much attention (since there are so many plotlines), and manages to really make, well, an impact. Immensely superior to the laughably bad Armageddon.

This movie sucks, and takes itself so fucking seriously. At least the similarly awful Armageddeon wasnt afraid to seem frivolous.
Irwin Allen is rolling in his grave.

I like some disaster movies, but this ranks among the worst of the big-budget ones that I've seen. Maybe it didn't seem so cliched when it came out, but there's really not one aspect of this movie that you can't find in another, better movie of the same genre.

Wow! Re-reading this thread, it's hard to believe all the hate for Deep Impact! But even harder to believe is Lecter's spirited defence of The Day After Tomorrow!!!

Irwin Allen is rolling in his grave. You don't have a clue what your talking about.. If anything, Armegeddon was frivolous and lame by showing us that 12 oil drillers can be made into astronauts in less than 2 days, then proceed to fly to this asteroid, try to land on it with debris the size of a house all around the ship that would've blown them up the moment they arrive..

Armageddeon was frivolous and unabashedly junky. I knew you couldn't write, but I assumed you could read. Thank you for clearing that up.

So earnest I expected a hallmark card. Crap like this sucks the fun out of the disaster genre, its almost as bad as that 70s movie Meteor.

Armageddon is fun and enjoyable and (gasp) a good movie. This is not.

Terrible all the way through and bloody boring.
You wanted Earth to get wiped out. Telling that the director never did so again.
TDAT is the best to whoever didn't like it. It's everything I want in a disaster flick. This on the other hand is bull.
I don't feel any of the drama or anything for the characters for a drama movie.

B Oh, yes, and the script is one lousy POS. In fact, I know it's a disaster movie, but this really stretches the suspension of disbelief.

I don't feel any of the drama or anything for the characters for a drama movie. Yes, cause trying to outrun the cold as it spread onto the city like in The Day After Tomorrow is any more realistic than DEEP IMPACT.. Again, COME ON!!!!

 Re: Deep Impact
Its been a long time since a watched this movie and i cant actually believe i gave it a B-, maybe i was to young and wanted just disaster distruction and more but right now I think its a fantastic and emotional movie, and pretty much one of the best disaster films in a long time, sure TDAT was fun but it was stupid... very stupid, and 2012 was just a horrible piece of shit compared to this movie. I wish they make more disaster flicks like this and not make them overly exaggerated.

 Re: Deep Impact
Rewatched this for the first time in ages. Well made and has some truly moving, surprisingly emotional moments. But yeah its pretty fucking boring for most of it.
I do greatly, greatly appreciate that it took a Nolan-like realistic view at how things would play out.
