NO ONE predicted it to be #1 this weekend (except maybe Roid, who only considered it a possibility), and it didn't. Now, whether this would have happened in the 80's or not is really not my concern. I couldn't care less. We're not in the 80's. And also, based on some questions earlier in this thread, whether you actually saw Rocky or not is questionable. I haven't seen it yet, so I can't confirm, but you got played within 24 hours of seeing the film, so it's not like you can make an excuse that you forgot. Welcome to 2006, Grandpa. ![HaHaHa :hahaha:](./images/smilies/icon_hahaha.gif)
If you say so Zing.. Your just masking the fact that I was actually right on this and the movie really didn't open well, thus from a Domestic box office standpoint, coming it at #3 for the weekend for a movie that received really good reviews and that was #1 at one time is hard to overlook..

Rocky gets out of the ring (music still playing) and heads toward the exit with the chanting "ROCKY!" Mason stays in the ring awaiting the count on the split decision. Rocky heads out near the entrance and in the background you hear ".... and the winner, and still undefeated champion, Mason 'The Line' Dixon." Rocky doesn't stop and shakes hand with the crowd. The screen freezes on Rocky shaking a crowd member's hand.... What more needs to be said about this??? So now what??? Are there 2 prints of this movie with different endings or what?? ROCKY should've won..

Buddy. It's not the 80's. stallone can't get anything made. No one wants him in their films. Time have changed. I think this is a fantastic opening. There were people that predicted in would do 30 mill in it's whole run when it was first announced. Getting owned by Ben Stiller is not that big a deal. This will finish with 70 mill, triple the budget costs and probably make 200 WW. That aint bad.

A great end to the Rocky series and more then a few scenes had me choking up. Loved the return to more character development and of course the old Paulie, Rocky banter is still as entertaining as ever. I wasn't a big fan of the realistic look to the fight but otherwise perfect.

No one said it would be number one for the weekend, and would most likely either be 2 or three depending how well Pursuit held. And BKB your still in the 80s. In the 80s Stallone was the 2nd highest earner of the decade, He hasn't had a film gross over 45 million in 9 years, and hasn't had a starring role in theaters in 4. Ben Stiller on the otherhand was in 6 huge films in the last two years. He is in the top ten earners of the decade. This is why you have a weak argument, because its paper thin pointing out things any idiot could see.

[font=century gothic]This had absolutely no right being this good. I'm almost ashamed to admit that this got me teary-eyed, but I guess that's just a testiment to Stallone in making me care once again about a character who seemed to be way past his prime. I loved the film so much that I didn't care that it featured two of the biggest assholes on the planet - A.J. Benza and Max Kellerman (They were both actually good in their limited roles).
Everything in this movie from a plot standpoint is handled perfectly, especially the whole age thing. As a matter of fact, as soon as the movie began I could've cared less about how old Stallone looked, but more about how old Rocky was and how exactly he could've held up in the ring. I also especially loved how they handeled the Adrian plotline. The last shot at the grave with the roses worked beautifully - and yes, I'm using the word "beautifully" to describe something in a Rocky film besides anything in the first one.
Another thing I enjoyed is that Bill Conti came back. Although he doesn't really add anything new, it's nice to hear his score once again. The only minor problem I had with it, is that he made the Rocky theme during the training sequence a little too "jazzy" with the trumpets and all.
If there is a problem with the film, it's the same problem that Baumer brought up. It's a 100 minute film that should be about twenty minutes longer. One scene that should've been included is Rocky meeting up once again with his and Creed's former trainer Duke. As it is right now, he just kind of appears at the press conference out of nowhere. It wouldn't surprise me if a future DVD release is an extended cut.
That one small problem aside (That and maybe it's a little too corny) I loved the film. Rocky finally gets the fitting end he deserved.

Saw it again today, and wow I was completely right. The first time I saw it I knew it was good but somewhat underwhelmed as it was probably my most anticipated film since Sith or T3. But the 2nd time, the training sequence and the fight really grew on me, and are great lengths. I change my grade to an A- to an A+ and I have no doubt that this will grow as an instant classic. Even Tarver is much better the 2nd time you see it. I still admit the moments with Duke are just like "Ok we'll use him"
It has now cracked my top five of the year.
The biggest shock of the night, my dad who thought stallone was the biggest joke of the 90s and today, loved the film, and said the fight was one of the most beautiful cinematography he ever saw, my eyes really shot out. He was the last person I ever expected to fall under Rocky's charm.

Theres no reason to take a cheap shot at my father bkb, He's never seen films like Sin City or the Kill Bills, he's not a really fantasy type of guy. More drama and comedy. Rocky Balboa lives on, and for the first time in quite sometime, Rocky will never be forgotten, with the change of his statue's location, his gloves entrance into the Smithsonian, and his great finale in 2006. Rocky has sealed his fate as probably the top 5 greatest characters of all time.

I've now seen it twice as well, and I liked it more the second time (shcoker). And it really does surprise me that i liked it more the second time. I loved the training and thought the fight was better. As films go, IV and III are still more "fun" but as films go, this is the second best in the series. So as others have mentioned, I hope the DVD is longer.

I actually liked Drago's better when he fought Rocky. Much more regal.

I'll never truly understand WHY folks bash ROCKY V so much.. Help me to understand this cause even I have to admit that Tommy Gunn certainly made you hate him more than Mason "The Line" Dixon and his bland personality.. Help me to understand WHY you and others here despise ROCKY V so much.. Was it cause the fight between Gunn and Rocky didn't take place in the Ring??? What?? Personally I thought ROCKY V had more excitement in that street fight than the HBO shot fight in ROCKY BALBOA..

Because it took place in the streets. That is why. The film could have been great if the final fight took place in the ring.

As a boxing film, Rocky 5 is fine, it really gets much more flat than it does deserve, watching it a year ago for the first time in about 10 years really did take a lot of the pain away. However, as a Rocky film, it just doesnt work. After watching the Balboa the 2nd time, while Tommy Gunn was fun, Mason was a lot better the 2nd time, and felt like a real guy, and the fight completely owned the street fight, as cool as that was.

Yeah?? And?? Come on, tell me this isn't the only reason why this movie gets the hate that it does?? There has to be more to it than that cause that really is sort of weak for something as minor as that..

I think that's it though BKB. It needed the ring. That would be like Rambo taking place in the boxing ring at the end of the movie instead of the jungle or the forest.

I actually disagree on the whole debate over Rocky V, I think the street fight was one of the more interesting parts of the film, it went in line with Rocky's old streetfighting thoughts, I mean on the story they had, he couldnt fight in the ring.
The biggest problem with Rocky V is plain and simple, they took America's greatest underdog and one of the biggest heroes, and made him poor, mentally challenged, and just scared. It's very depressing how they first ended the rocky franchise.
