KPop Demon Hunters is a 2025 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released by Netflix. It was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, from a screenplay by Kang, Appelhans, and Hannah McMechan and Danya Jimenez, based on a story conceived by Kang. The film stars the voices of Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun. It follows a fictional K-pop girl group, Huntr/x, who lead double lives as demon hunters; they face off against a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, whose members are secretly demons.

KPop Demon Hunters originated from Kang's desire to create a story inspired by her Korean heritage, drawing on elements of mythology, demonology, and K-pop to craft a visually distinct and culturally rooted film. The film was reported to be in production at Sony Pictures Animation by March 2021, with the full creative team attached. The film was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks and was stylistically influenced by concert lighting, editorial photography, and music videos as well as anime and Korean dramas. The soundtrack features original songs by several talents, and a score composed by Marcelo Zarvos.

KPop Demon Hunters was released on June 20, 2025, on Netflix.

Post Re: K-Pop Demon Hunters
I hadn't even heard of this movie until it started going viral a few weeks ago and mostly checked it out because a friend recommended it to me, but I'm glad I did because it's an absolute delight (it feels like Spider-Verse by way of Josie and the Pussycats) and one of the most fun and original movies of the year. Gorgeously animated and quite touching. It's also a full-on musical that harkens back to the Disney Renaissance era in a lot of ways that gives it a special nostalgic touch. The main duet "Free" felt like a contemporary nod to something like "A Whole New World." The soundtrack is non-stop bangers and one of the best of the year - this could very easily be a frontrunner for Best Original Song if Netflix campaigns it. Definitely check this one out - it's a great option for the entire family. A-

Surprisingly good for such a ridiculous concept. Maybe not at the same level as the Disney/Pixar greats, but it definitely captured the magic that their latest movies have been lacking. Would have been a big hit if realesed in theaters.

7.8/10
