Re: Joker: Folie à Deux
Ambitious, but maybe not ambitious enough?
The first film is much better imo. The musical aspect works in some parts, some not so much. Gaga and Phoenix are great but Harley/Arthur as an on screen relationship kind of falls flat due to the script. Also seems like some big scenes in the trailer aren't in the movie... weird. Overall, it has some good aspects but just didn't satisfy what I thought the film would deliver.

Apparently, a lot of Gaga/Harle scenes were left on the cutting room floor. Is she a lead in this or more supporting? Sounds like the latter.

Definitely supporting. One big scene where they are dancing on the stairs in the trailer wasn't in the movie. Odd.

Indeed. Have just seen it. Agree with your review. So much potential lost. Its a real slap in the face sadly

It works until the musical numbers start. There’s no clever way they work them in, the film just stops for the two leads to sing jazz standards over and over again. There’s probably like 45 minutes of actual movie here. A bizarre choice.

Re: Joker: Folie à Deux
A rebuke of the first and anyone who idolizes Joker or Arthur, but with jazz hands.
As someone who didn’t like Arthur or the first movie, I can appreciate that idea and intent (it’s wild and bafflingly stupid Warners went along with it), but Phillips is in way over his head. He’s either wallowing in misery and mistaking it for self-importance or he’s not trying (musical numbers) which I guess makes this truly twisted.
It’s a shame because there are the bones of a good movie here. On the bright side, this movie’s existence does answer my question about how this guy could possibly become The Joker. Apparently I was fooled by the lack of an article.
1.5
The end credits song that Phoenix sings is maybe the legit funniest thing Phillips has done since the original Hangover. He’s spent 130 minutes telling his audience that they’re worthless pieces of shit, but if they just keep looking, true love will find (them) you too! What a fucking troll.

Re: Joker: Folie à Deux
So yeah, this is an odd film. I wasn't the biggest fan of Joker, but it's a well constructed film about the origin and study of the Joker character with some nice tie-ins too. But Joker 2 is just bit of a mess all around, which starts with the pretty weak story. It does feel like they didn't intend, or at least not this of, a sequel and then decided to make one and throw the story quickly together. Because the dialogue is pretty dull around and neither its prison or its courtroom settings are pretty effective. Especially the courtroom stuff is too boilerplate. The performances are pretty good however, both Phoenix and Gaga acts their parts well, individually, because as a couple, well the story appears as pretty much an anti-love story, so its not a couple to root for. And Joker/ Flecl he's a bit more of a villain than victim in this compared to the first film and I wasn't that engaged on him either. Gleason is also good, but it's just a small light in meh film and Keener and Coogan's parts offer nothing either. Then there's the ending, well it's a bit gutsy I guess, but I felt indifferent towards it. But then through it all, the musical parts were absolutely highlights for me, they were great actually and just about every time the film was about to lull me, there was a revival with a musical part. The musical elements pretty much countered the lack of a strong story, I visualize it being a much better as a stage musical than film. Even more than the previous film it felt less like a comic book film too, which doesn't have to be bad, but just not something you'd expect from a comic character. Also have to mention that the actor playing Harvey Dent is plain bad, but also the character feels nothing like Harvey Dent except in sharing the name. And the dream sequences don't feel earnest either, I guess stemming more from the film just not working in a linear way that they tried to compensate in other ways. But yeah, music works for me and I like the film for that and through its performances it's also still a step above like half of the DCEU, so overall, bit of an average concoction.
