 Down Periscope
Quote: Down Periscope is a 1996 American military comedy submarine film directed by David S. Ward, produced by Robert Lawrence, and starring Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Holly, and Rob Schneider along with Bruce Dern, Harry Dean Stanton, William H. Macy, and Rip Torn in supporting roles.
Released by 20th Century Fox on March 1, 1996, the film focuses on Lieutenant Commander Thomas Dodge (played by Grammer), a capable (if somewhat unorthodox) U.S. Navy officer who fights to save his career after being saddled with a group of misfit seamen who have been brought together as the crew of his first command, USS Stingray, a rusty, obsolete World War II-era diesel submarine that is the focus of a special naval war game, supervised by a bitter rival (played by Dern) who is fighting to bury Dodge's career by any means necessary.

 Re: Down Periscope
I thought this was very good and very of its time. A time in the 90s shared with other military comedies like Sgt. Bilko, Renaissance Man, Major Payne, and In the Army Now, and what I very much liked about it is that it's not a spoof. It's funny but it's a step or two back from poking fun at the genre - it isn't silly though it is obviously far-fetched. But it's no where near Hot Shots! level.
A thing I noticed in watching Down Periscope is that I really dig submarine movies. Apart from The Hunt for Red October it seems every time I watch one I have positive things to say about them.

 Re: Down Periscope
Yeah, those are good, but I haven't seen Das Boot. I really should. But I also liked Hunter Killer and K-19: The Widowmaker. There aren't too many submarine movies but there's enough for it to be a sub-genre.

 Re: Down Periscope
I saw Das Boot long ago when I probably didnt appreciate foreign films as much. I was a bit disappointed but it's well made. Haven't seen K19 or HK so will need to catch up.

 Re: Down Periscope
Oz is getting nuclear subs "soon" as well, so it's a good time to be into them.

 Re: Down Periscope
Always had a soft spot for this. It's probably like a C+ a best, but it's light, and I've always been a fan of Grammer, and Lauren Holly was a smokeshow in the vein of Kristy Swanson.

 Re: Down Periscope
I rank Valeria Golino as the hottest spoof comedy actress. She's so frickin' hot in Hot Shots! Part Deux

 Re: Down Periscope
Good shout on Tia Carrere, and I totally forgot about Liz Hurley in Austin Powers. Smoking.
