Too bad it’s with this movie.

Wicked clearly was hurt by the opening of Moana with that tiny increase compared to everything else. Hopefully can have a better increase today.

I think the capacity issues of having 3 big films (with 2 $100M+ OWs within 5 days of each other) will be good for Wicked's legs over the long run since it had a smaller opening. Wicked is appointment watching at almost 3 hours vs Moana so those audiences will watch it over the next few weeks that rush to Moana.

I'm starting to get glimpses that Wicked has a chance at $500M though. 5.81X multiplier but will probably be at $350M+ even before Christmas dailies start. Add in awards attention and will broaden out. And weak holiday fare.

Moana deserved a better sequel. Had it been even on Frozen 2 level (which itself is just ok but at least had decent songs) think it could've grossed close to Inside Out 2. Seems reception isn't bad though so we'll see.

Frozen 2 did feel like a theatrical level effort that didn't quite connect, whereas Moana 2 feels phoned in

Wicked is still going to end up beating Moana in the end, just a gut feeling it seems like a bigger deal.

Moana is perhaps the last super popular film Disney released except for possibly Encanto

Encanto is the last one to be hugely successful but Moana has surpassed even Frozen in popularity from what I can tell.

Same Cinemascore as Frozen 2 is encouraging.

Number for Gladiator 2 is not good yesterday however as it has no family appeal it’s drop today should be much less than Moana and Wicked.

Wed #'s

1 Moana 2 $57,500,000
2 Wicked $20,500,000 +22.9% $165,300,000
3 Gladiator II $6,600,000 -1% $73,807,811
4 Red One $2,800,000 +9% $60,140,000

- Bonhoeffer $511,846 -21% $6,784,444
- Venom 3 $475,000 -10% $135,233,186

Moana could be at $350M-400M worldwide by Sunday. Seems it's well on its way to $1B.

Moana only behind Incredibles 2 ($71M), Inside Out 2 ($64M) (not including TLK 2019). $90M+ Wed daily tally pulling us closer to matching last year.

Moana global:

France $3.7M biggest opening day of the year! #2 biggest animated opening ever behind Incredibles. 2. 302% ahead of Moana (+75% including previews).

Indonesia $1.2M biggest animated opening day of all time, and best for a non-local film this year. 8X original film.

South Korea $1.1M (#3 biggest for Disney this year). 154% ahead of Moana. That's with bad floods impacting Seoul.

Italy: $900K, 2nd best launch ever for Disney behind Ralph Breaks The Internet. 308% ahead of Moana.

Philippines $700K #2 animated bow ever (behind Inside Out 2), and the 2nd best non-local start of 2024. 76% ahead of Moana.

Opening today are Germany, Mexico, Australia and Brazil. Friday adds UK, Spain and China.

Empire says Wicked did 16.5m today. The second highest Thanksgiving day gross of all time after Moana 2 which fell to 28m

Wicked should be over under 30m on Friday and Moana could approach 60m incredible

Charlie says the 5-Day weekend is headed for 210-230 Million. Holy forking shirtballs! That's nuts. It's extremely impressive that it's doing these insane numbers with Wicked also being a huge hit.

It's pretty crazy how close Moana 2 might get to a 5day of $250M though it will likely just miss it.

1 Avengers: Endgame 2
2 Spider-Man: No Way Home 3
3 Avengers: Infinity War 3
4 Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens 4
5 Black Panther 5
6 Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi 5
7 Deadpool & Wolverine 5
8 Jurassic World 5

Only 8 films have ever reached $250M in 5 days or less, 5/8 MCU, 1 JP, and 2 SW.

Also, it's clear Wicked has become a zeitgest film at this point so a lot of fans outside the core fanbase will be watching it over the next few weeks.

Moana is at the point it's starting big but let's see how much it branches out further post Thanksgving in terms of legs.

The only major time I can recall 2 zeitgeist films of this size (likely $500M+ adjusted) so close together are The Lion King 1994 and Forrest Gump.
