 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
From DHD:
Comscore reports that 13% K-12 are on break while 81% colleges are off. This moves to 95% K-12 off on Monday and 94% colleges on break before near 100% levels from Christmas Eve though Jan. 1.
Not too alarming for Mufasa's long term just yet but clearly not getting anywhere close to TLK. Sonic could make a run for $300M.
Other #'s:
WICKED ($2.4M) -20.6% MOANA 2 ($1.8M) -21.4%
Not terrible drops for Wicked and Moana considering Sonic / Mufasa came out.

 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
Mufasa has a budget of 200m not counting marketing, this is a blow for disney, another franchise bites the dust.
Snow white has a budget of 269m, im amazed that disney keeps making the same mistakes over and over.

This shows that Avatar 2 still ending up one of the biggest movies of all time as impressive, the 3D novelty was gone but Cameron was able to sell the story enough. It also helps that the Navi have more expressive faces than CGI lions who it's difficult to make feel like real characters you want to see the next movie from.

It's kinda baffling Disney thought this was a good idea... would have made sense if it was cheap.

 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
I still can't believe these two family movies opened on the same day. Such a baffling decision.
I wouldn't count Mufasa out just yet. The holiday will give it a great multiplier. Those whose priority was Sonic might catch Mufasa later.

 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
Charlie's #'s:
Sonic $26.5M ($20M Friday) / $61-69M weekend Mufasa $13.5M ($10M+ Friday) / $32-35M weekend
Mufasa's legs I feel will be better than Sonics despite the reviews just because Mufasa skews to younger audiences. Sonic as a series as had incredible consistency in their OWs ($58M-$72M) it's looking like for all 3 films over 4 years.
I feel these will be a lot closer total wise than the initial opening days indicate.

I sort of feel Avatar 2 benefitted immensely from nothing else really to see so it held a lot better than it may have with real competition. Even for post Covid, the Dec. 23-25, 2022 weekend (below) was terrible. Then Avatar 2 had only 1 film open to $15M+ until Ant Man 3 in its 10th weekend (M3Gan). 1 Avatar 2 $63,338,220 -52.8% 2 Puss in Boots 2 $12,429,515 3 I Wanna Dance with Somebody $4,700,450 4 Babylon $3,603,368 5 Violent Night $3,513,430 -30.5% 6 Black Panther 2 $3,492,584 -34.7% 7 The Whale $1,038,394 +617.3%

 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
Migration's multiplier from opening day would give Mufasa 297 million, Aquaman 2's would give it 120. So I'll say it finishes around 200.

Sat #'s from Charlie
Sonic $20M / $62-65M -22.3% Mufasa $12M / $35-37M -9.8%
I think Mufasa is priming up for a leggy run.

 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
Mufasa is a likeable film. It will do well in the long run. Those who flocked to Sonic will see it later on.
Certainly, a big drop from the last one but a respectable gross - perhaps around $250-70m.

 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
Sonic franchise really smashed the video game curse getting 86% RT by its third movie. It could've been really terrible too.

 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
They have a mixed track record but Paramount really made the smartest move updating the special effects of Sonic after the initial bad social media reaction in 2019 when the first trailer came out. 5 years later to be powering a $60M+ OW with 80%+ RT score and likely $200M+ gross here again is pretty impressive. It's also Sonic not Mario or Pokemon so really shouldn't be at box office grosses this large but people do really enjoy these movies. It's probably going to be a business case or marketing class example some day of effectively acting on customer feedback.
Mufasa's daily holds are promising. With not much to see should have a leggy run. Pretty bad global launch of $122M considering the last film made $1.7B.
Good opening for The Brutalist.
Gladiator's PTA dropped 22% so maybe if it holds onto enough theaters it can leg out over the holidays to a $190M finish.
We have 9 days to make $748.7M to match last year. Not happening but bringing that gap to < $400M would be good

 Re: Sonic/Mufasa weekend thread
Yes the redesign was a great call and Carrey casting was always genius because he and Sonic both peaked in the 90s, I think without him or if it was all animated it just comes and goes.

From Deadline: Quote: We’re told Angel Studios have been devils in their box office accounting: There were free screenings on Monday (which were somehow paid for), and began full showtimes on Wednesday and Thursday, but didn’t report those grosses, and are rolling them into the weekend gross. https://deadline.com/2024/12/box-office ... 236239220/
