Dune 2 Box Office #'s
Charlie has Dune 2 with $11M in previews including $2M from Sunday early shows last week.
DHD has $10M+. A rating.
A bit underwhelming tbh but the total is more important than the OW and I could still see this possibly do $1B globally.
Previews on Thursday starting at 3pm.

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
It's a fine start. Think the problem is most people want to see it in a premium screen and lack of screens. Theaters really should build more premium screens.

$65-$75M OW makes sense. The first one wasn't that huge.

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
It really didn't have a chance to be. $44M in October with the movie being on demand was always going to lead to meh at bestlegs. $44M opening in its original December 2020 date with no covid takes it over $200M.
I think it can hit $80M off an $11M preview. WoM will be good and imaxes will be packed full. The movie is alot more accessible than the first one. It's not all that different from Avatar storywise. Villeneuve takes it to way different places though. I think general audiences can handle it if they're given a hefty dose of exciting action alongside the troubling themes about hero worship.

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
That seems fine to me. More than double dune 1 and more than Oppenheimer which came out in July and more people were free on Thursday to watch a 2 hr 40 minutes movie.
It’ll be unexpectedly backloaded like way of water where people wait for the premium screens to see it..
Though 11m previews seems like enough for 80m to me.

9.1 and #30 already on top 250 IMDB, 95% RT audience score. Should get an A Cinemascore.

Seems decent to me but depends how much more frontloaded it'll be than Dune 1

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
12m seems higher than what tracking suggested at the end. It probably benefited from record high ATP. Plus studio probably rounded up the preview number. It will all even with Friday estimates. I am hoping for better walkups than what we saw yesterday. Minus Imax it did not do great elsewhere. Even other PLF did not have anywhere near the demand that blockbusters have. That should hopefully change over the weekend.

Deadline is saying 30-34m Friday. Hopefully it's at least 32 for a 20m true Friday

Charlie is saying 20+ not including previews and Empire is saying 33m including previews.

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
$70-80M OW is really solid. Almost double the first one.
I think the $100M+ expectations were unrealistic. The first one did well but was not a cultural phenomenon.

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
It could still double the first one, 82-83m is still In Reach with a 34m od.

Really? After all the hype and everyone saying the first getting streamed cost it 100 million and all the cast protesting, and Wonka goodwill ... Good on Marley though, and Madame Web should pass Elektra adjusted this weekend, won't touch Catwoman's 68 million though.

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
Doubling will be quite the asterisk. That's like saying congrats to Rogue Nation for out opening Ghost Protocol's 13 million OW because it was only in 425 theaters. Without streaming Dune 2 is about doing what Dune would have done, maybe a 65 million OW, but this is a sequel to a beloved film so it should be expected to open 30% higher? Good on it for at least increasing it's audience to maybe an extra 800k though, pretty much anyone that saw the first came to see the second, not always the case with adaptations. It's doing exactly what I expected to do. Super hyped by a super niche market film.

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
I posted it elsewhere but only two movies have ever done $100M+ OW's outside of holiday weekends/summer that were 2 hr and 45 min or longer (The Batman, Endgame). When people are working during the day it's appointment viewing to see a movie this long. Add in the desire to see it on premium screens and it decreases the rush out further due to capacity.

good number, this series isn't as accessible as some would like to pretend it to be.

I raised my eyebrow at all the blatant movie star casting choices at first but I think it worked. Seeing all those familiar faces makes it more accessible.

Charlie is saying 29m saturday. Great saturday increase for sure. OW should hit 85m at this rate as I am expecting amazing Sunday as well.

That would be really good and a good sign for legs. If it does do $85M OW and has similar legs to Oppenheimer (although weaker accounting for worse non-summer weekdays) it would take it to say... $300-310M ish total. That would be really extraordinary. Practically ensures that WB will end up adapting the next two books (which still take place in this timeframe with these characters). After that the series jumps ahead into the future and starts to get really weird.

Re: Dune 2 Box Office #'s
It does have staggered spring breaks all month so the weekdays will be ok but yeah Oppenheimer legs are unlikely but it can still do 250m+ and 600-700 WW
