Yes, being #1 this weekend would be amazing. Would also be cool if Godzilla is able to get #2 and have the top 2 films being from Japan. Boy and the Heron seems to have more Japanese showtimes, at least in my area.

$5.56m for The Boy and the Heron.

-20% drop for Trolls and -30% for Wish from last Friday.

Looking like 14-15m

Has a shot to be the biggest Ghibli film in America adjusted for inflation if I’m not mistaken.

Do any Ghibli films adjust to over 30m domestic?

Seems like with good WOM, Boy and Heron could do 40m+

Two Japanese films succeeding in the US market because there's such a dearth of quality entertainment being produced in Hollywood.

Also I hadn't realized how hard Wish bombed. It's not even at $100M worldwide yet and it cost $200M. This is one of the biggest bombs ever surely.

Yeah Wish is an epic flop. It’s Strange World levels but perhaps worse because there were high expectations around it.

The Japanese 1-3 punch is a nice message to Hollywood studios to get their act together.

At least this weekend seals the deal for Trolls to get past $100M. Seems like even with Wonka it should be able to get by.

Congrats to Wish for going from a 61% drop to a 31% drop. If it drops 15% next weekend, and then 7.5% after, maybe it can be the next Titanic box office giant! :funny:

Godzilla's hold is exceptional. If Heron didn't show up which has a lot of audience overlap, pretty sure we could have seen an under 10% drop or increase. It had a 52% drop on Friday compared to last week but JUST 3% Saturday and 17% Sunday! If it manages another hold like that maybe it can do under 20% next weekend.

Dec 8, 2023 $2,260,243 -52%
Dec 9, 2023 $3,640,017 -3%
Dec 10, 2023 $2,442,450 -17%

HG is at $136M from 4 weekends, already at a 3.04X multiplier. Hope it has a decent enough hold against Wonka to give it enough to hang around for the holidays but I have it at about a $173M total right now which would be a 61.4% retention (unadjusted) with Mockingjay 2. This movie could have easily been a Marvels like flop under $100M so it is a pretty respectable total, especially with its $100M budget.

Great for Godzilla and much needed decent weekend for Wish.

Very awesome to see Heron take #1. And great holds for Hunger Games and Godzilla (also very awesome to see this one doing so well), and a few others but...

What a weak state the box office is currently in. A lot rests on WB this winter to revive it and help theaters out.

I think this may have been the 3rd worst week for top 10 box office gross for the year. That's pretty pathetic just 15 days before Christmas.

It really feels like all the post Barbenheimer box office momentum went down the drain aside from Taylor and Freddy.

Annual box office is at $8.35B. It very much feels like we could have gotten to $10B with a better calendar. Maybe will do $8.8B but really feels like the strike, uninteresting product and a convoluted summer release schedule made a big difference.

Here's where this year's months rank:

January 2023 - 22nd
February 2023 - 22nd
March 2023 - 17th
April 2023 - 3rd biggest ever
May 2023 - 20th
June 2023 - 14th
July 2023 - 4th biggest ever
August 2023 - 16th
September 2023 - 18th
October 2023 - 19th
November 2023 - 23rd

Mario and Barbenheimer are the ONLY months that make the top 13 list ever. Those 3 movies make up a whopping 18.4% of the total year's box office.

No surprise, of all the months that were the WORST, November takes the cake.

How bad was November 2023? Take out the pandemic years of 2020/2021, and you have to go back to 1998 to see the most recent year to do lower. That's with 137% higher ticket prices!!! So admissions wise probably looking like sometime in the 1980s!

I agree with most of what your saying, but it's been true forever that the first weeks of December are pretty barren, which isn't helped one bit by the two Thanksgiving releases (Napoleon and Dune) flopping.

You are correct for sure, Wakanda fell apart by this weekend last year so not prime time for $$$ too though we were really in dire straights from Nov's historically horrendous performance!

It's nice to see Godzilla hold so well. I saw it last week, which I wasn't even planning to do because I don't care about Godzilla. But a friend convinced me to see it because they loved it and they also didn't care about Godzilla. I'm glad I did. It was really good. I was hoping it would cross over. It wasn't hard to see that happening, as it's pretty crowd-pleasing. Hopefully, it has exceptional legs from here on out.

Interesting that almost 20 years to the day of The Last Samurai opening in early December - two Japanese productions are having their day at the BO.

2003 seemed very Japan centric. I saw that Kill Bill Volume 1 was released that year as well as The Last Samarai AND Lost In Translation. Though surprisingly the only 1 of those 3 to not film in Japan some parts was The Last Samaraii which filmed in NZ.

I feel like Scarlet has barely aged in 20 years. She definitely looked mid to late 20 something in that movie. Still not even 40!

Yes good call. I remember seeing all three in theatres and it perhaps never dawned on me at the time but Japan certainly played a central role that year (great year for film).

Scarlett took off with that film. I originally saw her in Ghostworld. Had no idea who she was but knew then she'd be a star.

The-numbers model estimated $28M final gross, let's push thing up a bit and say $30M is a target.

Heron added +$200K to its overall gross so actual is at $12.97M (3day and previews).

Daily Grosses
FRI - $5.592M
SAT - $4.034M
SUN - $3.347M

Looks like a solid Sunday hold so hope that helps it's legs over the holidays.

Godzilla also went up! Godzilla Minus One $8,591,413 -25%

Dec 8, 2023 $2,275,678 -52%
Dec 9, 2023 $3,674,780 -2%
Dec 10, 2023 $2,640,955 -11%

So Godzilla on Sat/Sun would have pulled a single digit drop!!!

Saltburn lost 859 theaters. Was still in 707. It dropped 36%. Theater average went from $1,078 last weekend to $1,536 this weekend. Hell yeah. It will make it to double digits, which is what I was hoping. It's only $1,361,625 away.

It's not going to happen but if Godzilla has a 9.66X multiplier from this weekend on would get to $100M.

Really curious to see how it does over the holidays. I feel like it's looking solid for $50M+ with that second weekend hold.

$15M budget, what a completely unexpected box office surprise for this month.

HG would need a 7.93X multiplier from this weekend on to get to $200M. Chances are close to nil given it's going to lose theaters to the holiday movies but could certainly make a run for $180M.

Not gonna happen but if Godzilla has like a 120x multiple it’ll get to 1B domestically
