Not feeling a super breakout for this anymore.

Thinking in the history thread, I was looking into Barbara Streisand’s career. Her first film after gaining major success for singing and broadway, Funny girl became the number one film of 1968. They sold tickets at the movie theater at $100 a pop. The film adjusts 472 milllion, yet it’s been omitted from the adjusted charts on both non and the numbers. Streisand went on to win Best actress for the role. This could very well be a spot on comparison, though Swift clearly won’t win best actress, but maybe a nomination for documentary or song. They’d be crazy not to have one original song.

Release tomorrow is non trivial but decision was made really late. So it has to be mostly walkups. I am thinking 5m or so but we have to see how things go tomorrow.

This may have been an evil plan to force her hardcore super fans to buy a ticket for Fri-Sun, and now get them to see it again because they won't be able to resist going on opening night. And since you can't return the ticket, even if they don't go on their original date AMC and Swift Inc. still get the $$$.

This is the same person who turned a music industry contractual squabble into a multi-million dollar global PR crusade with her as the victim so I wouldn't put it past her!

I think the bigger reason here may be that tracking wise it looked just under Barbie level. They may needed this as an extra push to get the top OW or a better chance.

This is such a shitty move. Early on I thought they might decide to add Thursday showings. But since they hadn't yet, I figured they weren't going to. Talk about waiting until the last minute, when all of her fans bought tickets already that they can't get refunded. They thought they were going to the first shows and would have a chance at the merchandise the theater was selling. And now, if they don't also buy tickets to go on Thursday, they're screwed.

The only positive is that it will inflate the opening weekend. But Thursdays should have been announced right away.

Hamilton should have had a wide release, backed by a strong promotional campaign, instead of going to D+

It wouldn't have broken any records but would have been successful.

That was initially the plan (October 2021 release IIRC?) but Disney decided D+ needed a bump during the pandemic. It did actually work out (It was one of the only movie COVID-era releases that felt like a genuine event...it also got me to finally subscribe to D+ ) but yeah they definitely lost out on real revenue with the move. Luckily they seem to have finally realized that now that their movies have real theatrical windows again.

Beyonce herself showed up to the Eras premiere last night and lots of PR and marketing with the two of them such as sharing popcorn together to watch the movie.

This makes me think given how similar the release patterns are with AMC and financial terms, Swift may have in the background had something to do as an intermediary to help make it happen.

Beyonce's mom has also been praising Swift and Beyonce for their monumental tours.

This is telling me that Swift may come out in full force to support Beyonce's movie in December and pushing her fans to show up there too.

Beyonce is trying to latch on to the Swift gravy train it seems.

Clever as yes I think Swift will return the favour.

Sure why not, united they are sticking it to the system of studios/ labels taking all the gravy. Both will probably walk away with 500 million from this new type of deal.

Weak but expected after basically all tickets were sold before Thursday was announced, should still be able to explode to 30-40 million Friday.

To people who went: what was the vibe? Were people singing and dancing? Were there a normal amount of trailers?

Swift even got a shout out from Nolan!

“Taylor Swift is about to show the studios, because her concert film is not being distributed by the studios, it’s being distributed by a theater owner, AMC, and it’s going to make an enormous amount of money,” Nolan said. “And this is the thing, [theatrical exhibition is] a format and a way of seeing things and sharing stories, or sharing experiences, that’s incredibly valuable. And if [the studios] don’t want it, somebody else will. So that’s just the truth of it.”

Nolan is a prestige director so could probably do a deal like Swift if he really wanted to and got investment from outside the studios or self-financed his projects. Swift's play here really is going to have a longer term impact and the amount of $$$ they can make since it was shown you don't really need the middle men of the studios.
