Titanic and Tomorrow Never Dies was a biggie.
Also can't forget Fast and The Furious #1 and Dr. Dolittle.

I didn’t know both Grease and Jaws 2 broke the OW record. Crazy.
Ghostbusters and Gremlins opened the same weekend in 1984.

Nice. That said back then few movies used to open wide. I know Jaws started that trend in 75 but I presume most movies would go expansion mode.
Mark what were the OW records. It has to be Star Wars.

Re: You know me, I know my history...
Thank you. ATP was 2.34 back in 78. So Jaws 2 sold over 4m tickets while Grease sold under 4m tickets OW. Even as of 81 most of the movie theaters were single screen and so these numbers are impressive. That said single screens did have way more seats than tiny Multiplex screens now. Do you know how many theaters these 2 movies opened in 78?

Probably around the same...
Five years later RETURN OF THE JEDI opened in 836 theaters on 1.002 screens - so even that was just a 16 % difference... (and that was the first time both numbers were mentioned)

Ah Cannonball Run and Smokey and the bandit, retro fast and furious. Remake of Cannonball Run with all star cast could be huge, and old school stunts. Daniel Craig could do the stover Moore role! Also kind of crazy that Superman II was out internationally for like 6.5 months before it’s domestic debut, that would never happen today
