Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is coming back to theaters in 4K Feb. 17th. The Oscars are March 12th so this is a great way to bring more attention to the career of Michelle Yeoh and clearly this release is meant to do that. Even 23 years later, it remains the highest grossing foreign language film domestically in history ($128M). It's not even close between #1 and #2 and #3. 1 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon $128,078,872 2,027 $663,205 16 Dec 8, 2000 Sony Pictures Classics 2 Life Is Beautiful $57,247,384 1,136 $118,920 6 Oct 23, 1998 Miramax 3 Hero $53,710,019 2,175 $17,800,000 2,031 Aug 27, 2004 Miramax Feel this could do decently well. Lots of goodwill from Yeoh and Crouching Tiger has aged well. Asian cinema is also much more mainstream now than it was 23 years ago when the film was originally released. How will this do? |

I feel this movie is very Chinese, and they don't do well when released in the US. Japanese films do, but that's a genre unto itself. Chinese movies are tainted because of how the pandemic, shitty their government is, and just everything they're doing politically, and the ordinary man on the street probably doesn't know or care it's actually a Taiwanese film. Looks Chinese, will be treated as Chinese. |

There were 33 of us when I went on Saturday night. Kind of surprised but I did see it in the cities at a theater that's usually busy. My local theater has it too but they have it on a very tiny screen and are charging full price so I didn't want to watch it there. Was only $5 at AMC. |

This was huge at the time because it felt new to western audiences. I guess most have seen it now and no real need to see it again. I didn't see it until 2008 at a rooftop cinema/bar because it happened to be playing that night. I did like it. |

Exactly. The Artist would also fail upon re-release. As would Parasite. When they're new to us they can do well, but they only have one shot to break out. Only classics or era-defining blockbusters really have a shot at legit re-release successes. |
