Avatar 2 Predictions
Not sure if this was already made, but it has been suggested quite a bit that there would be Avatar sequels. How would it do?

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
I don't know it could pull a star wars with all the sequels grossing half of the original, but i think with the general acceptance of sequels since the late 90s especially the film can at least pull in 80% of what ever avatar makes domestically and increase big time in (buy around 500m)
so expect avatar to make between 570m-800m domestic and 1.2b int. for 1.77b-2b WW
thus my avatar 2 prediction would be
460m-800m dom. and 1.7b+ int for 2.16b-2.5b WW

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
Impossible to tell because we have no idea how long Cameron will wait before he directs again. Inflation could be through the roof if he waits another 12 years...

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
The one thing to consider as well is what if 3D becomes so wide spread 3 + years from now that the special effects novelty of the original film runs out. Cameron would need to pull a T2 special effects wise for any Avatar sequel...

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
well its not like he tries to rehash old effects, every film he has made has featured big time breakthroughs in visual effects.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
The budget almost certainly would be half a billion or more on any type of Avatar sequel ($500 m +). He went from $6.4 m to $102 m between Terminator sequels. I can only imagine how much Avatar 2 would cost.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
Fuck, this sequel is going to be Matrix Reloaded type opening powers and buzz. Expect opening records to tumble all-over.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
My first concern is the release date. I really hope they will stick to December rather than moving it to summer or some other month.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
Even though Cameron is very talented, it will be VERY difficult to replicate that sense of wonder you experience while watching the "first movie"...

In any case I am quite certain this won't happen for a while.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
But when you compare ROTK with FOTR, the decrease in multiplier is not that significant, at least not in the 65% level as you are proposing with Avatar 2. I'm interested to know what's the biggest percentage drop in term of multiplier from the original to the sequel, but when the original had close to 9.74 multiplier (without counting the re-release), I have a hard time seeing the sequel suddenly drop to 3.x level without change in release date.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
In any case, I don't see it becoming that much of a phenomenon again....see the huge advantage that Avatar had was a complete lack of 3D competition until March (!). That won't happen this time around.
I think it might top out with less than $700 million (yeah, terrible, indeed).
I do think that an increase overseas is actually possible, though.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
Even with inflation, I dont see this doing more than $600m. The lightening in a bottle 3D inspired hit status of the first wont necessarily translate to bigger box office. I think this will go the way of most sequels in the 80s/90s and gross less than the original. Think Jurassic Park/Lost World.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
5 years of inflation plus many more 3d screens and IMAX screens in 2014 than in 2009 - if no other movie squeezes in I see the three biggest movies of all time all by James Cameron... It'll be interesting to see how the TITANIC re-release will do in 2012 - that's why it's difficult to say if AVATAR 2 will make it to No. 2 or No. 3 - of course No. 1 is not out of the question...
EDIT: AVATAR opened in 2,032 3D theaters (including 191 IMAX) on 3,124 3D screens

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
Quite a wait between the first and second, but then they are dumping 3rd movie too fast....I wonder why this pattern is being followed these days by studios...anyone knows how that helps any movie ?
My initial prediction for Avatar2 - 180m/650m
Avatar3 basically depends on the WOM part2 will carry...it will definitely be big enough to go somewhere between 500-550m but anything after will depend on the reception of the 2nd part.

Decrease DOM, increase OS. Five years is a huge difference for countries like Russia and China.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
Mike Fleming reports: The three pictures will be filmed simultaneously with production beginning next year. The release of the first sequel will be in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later. Avatar 2, 3, and 4 will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment banner. Lightstorm will work once again with Joe Letteri and his team at WETA Digital on the three films. http://www.deadline.com/2013/08/fox-jam ... ore-554531

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
It's so sad that a gifted director like Cameron will have another 7 year break between movies... (I know, he catches up a little with 3 & 4 )

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
I'm almost more interested in the % from 3D it gets than the OW number.
I suspect it'll get not that much more on OW than Avatar did, and finish somewhere between 450 and 600, depending on how much people like it.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
What's fake-IMAX? Big D? I'm a small towner. We just got IMAX this year and Big D is on its way.
Certainly the 3D will drop from part 1 (esp in terms of adjusted for % of theaters showing in 3D) but I'm just curious how it will compare to other films that year.
