Post The New Studio - Amazon - Box Office Impact
Movie theater stocks went up today as a report came out that Amazon is planning to spend $1B for 12-15 theatrical releases a year.

They own MGM now so a studio willing to spend that much on theatrical releases makes me think it's inevitable Netflix will do more consistent theatrical releases in the future to keep up and diversify.

Can Sony, Disney, Universal, WB and Paramount handle Amazon as a theatrical entrant? Feel this could help lead to a boom time at the box office again as Amazon certainly could meet the non superhero movie need with huge money to back it up.

Most importantly, it's clearly a great sign for the theater business that Amazon is going all in here. Quantity of releases could go up which was clearly an issue this year. I wouldn't be shocked if Apple isn't too far behind here either on theatrical.

Curious what types of films they'll make. Will they all be mid budget films, $50-100 mil? Or are they going to do the whole "small budget, big budget" thing?

This is good news and may prompt the likes of D+ and Netflix to rethink their theatrical strategy.

I'd say one of their first biggies will be Killers of the Flower Moon - Scorsese's next which should be a solid $50-$100m grosser

This combined with the changing Wall Street sentiment that cares about profitability (who would thought this was important...) over subs with regards to streaming = tremendous sign for the future of theatrical.

This may portend a trend from Netflix, etc. if the Amazon films put butts in theaters and make $$. With that said, it's a wise choice by Netflix to put Knives Out 2 in theaters for a limited time.

Amazon's biggest OW up until now: The Big Sick $7,563,040 (wide expansion) / $42,873,127

As of this weekend: Creed $50M+ / $150M+

MGM / UA (now owned by Amazon) top movies ever domestic ($150M+ unadjusted):

1 1939 Gone with the Wind $198,680,470
2 1988 Rain Man $172,825,435
3 2001 Hannibal $165,092,266
4 2002 Die Another Day $160,942,139

Very big win for Creed. Has a chance to be #2 of all time for the studio if it reaches $173M.

Netflix would have almost certainly had a $150M+ movie first if they gave Glass Onion a longer release in theaters but still a big win outside the major studios.

Amazon has no rights to GONE WITH THE WIND... All "old" MGM rights were bought by Ted Turner and are thus part of WB Discovery...

Thanks for the correction. MGM has gone through so many ownership discussions over the last 100 years still cool to see the MGM brand could have a top 5 film from a legacy perspective.

They have Bond too right. I can see them doing a double O show and then the movies. The Boys has potential too

Creed 3 is definitely going to be a watershed moment for non-traditional studios. A theatrical run has brought a huge amount of buzz, record breaking, and critical acclaim that will carry forward to the platform later.

I give maybe 10 years by the time we see a tech company lead the annual box office tally? They have enough money to buy up IP and marketing reach for a company like Amazon, Google or Apple to really bring some mid tier films to a large audience.

Hope Apple gives Moon a big Oscar push and box office run to try to replicate Amazon's success with Creed. Feel it has $100M+ potential so would be cool to see at least 2 movies get past there outside the main studios.

If WB continues to struggle, I wouldn't be shocked if tech companies pick up some of their IP too.

Apple is going to spend $1B per year making movies for theatrical. Theater stocks all went up in response today.

With the prestige of movies like Creed III and Moon once it's released by Apple, Netflix really missed its chance to be first out of the gate with a mega smash Glass Onion. I would be shocked if Glass Onion 3 doesn't get a much wider theatrical release.

How long until we see a tech company lead the year in box office grosses?

It’ll depend what properties has. Like when disney got fox. Amazon’s Bond will probably have 800ww potential already.

So is anti trust legislation a joke? What's the point when a company as big as Amazon exists.

I wonder if Apple or Amazon should just buy some of WB's assets while they are going through issues now. They have a lot more cash and could even probably buy all of WB if they wanted.

WB was doing so well in 2018. 10 movies over $100M+. Still crazy that they could drive A Star Is Born to $215M.

Aquaman $335,061,807
A Star Is Born $215,288,866
Crazy Rich Asians $174,532,921
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald $159,555,901
The Meg $145,443,742
Ocean's Eight $140,218,711
Ready Player One $137,690,172
The Nun $117,450,119
The Mule $103,804,407
Rampage $101,028,23

6 $100M+ movies in 2019.
2 $100M+ movies in 2021.
3 $100M+ movies in 2022.

Seems like signs were starting to turn in 2019 for them with some big drops in box office grosses and misfires. The pandemic and their streaming strategy was just too much for them.

At least WB had the international rights to Creed III. As for the Rest of their lineup. They do have some potential to possibly get 6+ films over 100 million this year.

Evil Dead Rise- 50+
Renfield- 30+
The Flash- 300+
Barbie- 100+
Oppenheimer- 100+
Meg 2- 100+
Blue Beetle- 100+
The Nun2- 60+
Exorcist-20+
Dune Part II- 70+
Wonka- 50+
The Color Purple- 50+
Auqaman- 200+

Holy moly, Amazon apparently is exploring a deal to buy AMC. Stock went up on discussions. All speculative but both AMC and Amazon declined comment. Would be a pretty big deal as they'd be a film maker and distributor of the biggest film chain in the country.

Would essentially be able to put physical products across all theaters and make them spotlights for Amazon products while keeping all box office revenue.

That's just a rumor. Every year, for the past 3 years, that headline pops up  doubt it ever happens

Wouldn't it be easier to buy up Regal since they are in financial trouble right now?

AMC has actually been doing it right by embracing things like Laser and Dolby. And real imaxes unlike those frauds at regal (at least around here.) Give the people an experience they can't get at home and they will give you their money happily.

So I wasn't sure where to put this story, but worth speaking about.

WB shelved Coyote Vs Acme, a FINISHED film for the tax writeoff.

According to Deadline, the studio's lines were ringing off the hook over the weekend with people furious. So now WB is setting up private screenings for Amazon, Apple and Netflix. Maybe there's an off chance for a theatrical release if it ends up with Amazon/Apple.

Just when you think Disney is having so many issues you remember WB seems to be even worse off. :funny: A non-WARNER BROTHERS studio releasing a LOONEY TUNES movie, which has had ties to WB since the 1930s!!

They let Space Jam 2 go theatrical and think this is WORSE than that one?! :zonks:

The math averages out to $100M per film at most. So $50-60m in production and the rest in prints and advertising I suspect.

Mid tier films. Not Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, etc level features.
