Post Re: Twisters
Yeah this had been a big wildcard for me before this week, felt like a movie that could easily end up being a Independence day: Resurgence level non-event and make $100M or even less, but this ended up being the third biggest benefactor from the Super Bowl among the movies, and not far behind Deadpool 3 or Wicked despite not having nearly as strong of a built-in fanbase as either. So that raises the basement for this to $100-150M at least. Opening just one week before Deadpool & Wolverine is a little close for comfort, but as long as it's good it should withstand that movie and possibly leg out through August.

Trailer is good, I have no idea how this is going to do....it is a remake ? But with Glenn Powell's top gun character in the lead?

Jurassic World showed that blatant reliance on nostalgia works. This won’t reach the heights of JW but it will play well to a four quadrant audience hungry for a big budget non MCU adventure.

This will tank.

No one cares about disaster movies anymore. The original has little if any pop culture footprint. Glen Powell won’t be able to save it.

Feeling CW's box office is a positive sign for Twisters. $26M weekend from a small indie studio with no huge stars in mid April.

Twisters is opening in mid July, backed by Universal, star on the rise with Powell, a sequel with some element of nostalgia, and more global playability than CW. Up and coming director post Minari.

Feeling like it can do $40M+ here. Likely much more. Most importantly, showing audiences are willing to show up to disaster movies.

July looks so barren it'll probably open well. It looks like it could be entertaining. Opening a week before Deadpool is eh, maybe it should move up one weekend

$40m would be pretty bad considering the first one opened to a then amazing $40m. I feel this needs a $60/70m OW to ensure success. Especially in an empty month.

Solid trailer delivering the money shots.

not a breakout but not a flop. Twisters goes mid. current prediction this far out, OW within $2m of the OG’s OW.

They are going all in on heartland appeal and think this is a very smart move. The country music, mid west location and Powell should help given how popular TGM was in the heartland. Joseph Kosinski (TGM director) also wrote this screenplay.

If they were smart, they'd get Morgan Wallen to do the main song on the soundtrack and push for it to be the "song of the summer." Would help possibly make this a zeitgeist film you have to watch. Not seeing a flop here.

Already announced that Luke Combs will have a song featured on the soundtrack too. It launches May 16th and will help further raise awareness of the film.

Having a director raised in the midwest will also help and having this as his Minari follow up makes me more excited about this than just any popcorn flick.

I'm feeling Twisters and Horizon 1/2 are going to be a huge jolt for the summer box office.

Having a country soundtrack is genius and could seriously help this.

I'm thinking this is gonna be a big hit. The trailers are decent and make me surprisingly keen to see it. Even though its a sequel it feels kind of fresh as its not some big IP.

Yeah the Luke Combs song is good and this film is seriously looking to be quite the heartland vibe with the music and truck advertising.

If it is good, I think this breaks out big tiime.

Yeah count me in as full believer status now. This is going to be such a mid-summer vibe.

Powell strutting in his cowboy hat, the roaring dodge trucks, the seemingly epic country soundtrack, tornados destroying everything. The original Twister has more fans than some to think - it's opening weekend was 82% of the opening weekend at the time, and it had fantastic legs afterwards. Twister 2, circa 1999 or 2000, would have been a HUGE, record-crushing hit.

If reviews are good with this, I think we see a big big overperformer.

Not sure why this isn't opening on July 4th weekend instead of the week before Deadpool, or one week earlier than it is right now when there is just Fly Me to the Moon

To be fair, millennials and Gen z view memorial day and July 4th as 'experience weekends'. Event movies absolutely better opening on non-holiday weekends where they can be the main event.

Moving up one weekend is def. a good idea though.

Day After Tommorow (2004) would now adjust to $154.9M 4day OW.

Twister 1996 drove the shift to these types of movies but TDAT wasn't even with any huge stars.

Just shows the disaster epic is ripe for a breakout. One data point that shows why the potential is there, Covid and the 2011 film Contagion. Domestic gross $75.6 million. $12.01 million in DVD revenue first 6 months.

By March 2020:
-Seventh-most-popular film on iTunes, #2 for WB. #270 rank in Dec. 2019.
-Daily visits on piracy websites increased 5,609% in January 2020 compared to the previous month.
-HBO Now was the most viewed film for two weeks straight.

Even 4 years ago audiences were receptive on the disaster genre to blockbuster levels but on streaming. Also due to the darkest times of the pandemic.

There's been so many disaster flops in the last few decades that I want to see one break out first before declaring it back.

two things I feel that’re lacking from the promotion for this movie:

1. a coherent narrative idea, like, what’s happening, who are these people, and why should we care? feels very unimportant. the advertising is coasting on the existence & popularity of the first movie, but also awkwardly not acknowledging it.

2. any true money shots. it seems like cgi noise to me without dramatic tension

Still convinced this flops. I really see no reason for it to do better than ID42.
