Is anyone else upset that Shrek 2 did so well
It's a weird feeling. I mean, I have nothing against the film. Even though Shrek 2 often went for the lowest common denominator in humor and does not have the quality of a Pixar film I enjoy it very much. With that said, I must say I am a little jealous that a CGI film about a Ogre and a Princess could beat Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Spiderman....films that I enjoy leaps and bounds above Shrek 2. I often ask myself....how can a film like Shrek 2 beat my beloved franchises? It doesn't seem fair.

Disclaimer: The author is aware of why Shrek 2 did so well as it catered to a wider audience than the aforementioned films and enjoyed competitive advantages. Still, the slight bitterness remains...

Gee, i know how you feel. I was pissed that Shrek 2 did so well. But, you know, it's a thing of the past now, i've moved on since then, made peace with it. Shit happened, life goes on.

I didn't like the film all that much, but it's one of my sister's favorite movies, so it makes sense as to why it made so much.

I thought it was overrated but cute. It definetely didn't deserve to make so much money though.

I'm upset that people in Ethiopia have no food.
So no, it doesn't bother me in the slightest that Shrek 2 made a lot of money.

I'm not upset at all. I enjoyed Shrek 2 very much, and I think it deserved all the money it made.

Agreed - its a good movie, but it certainly doesn't deserve to stay above Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and all the other ones... but thats typical for boxoffice - movies never get the right amount of money they deserve...

I'm not upset because it delieved. The box office was in need for a family friend film and thats what it got, esp, with Troy beginning Rated R, Van Helsing and HP3 had a very dark appeal, and Passion being very violent, there was nothing for children.

I would not desribe myself as upset that it did so well, more dissapointed slash angered that it made so much. It did not deserve that much money, i hated it, but i have my reasons (my reasons being it was amazingly yawn inducing, just like the first one)
I am not upset that people in ethiopa have no feed either, i don't care at all really. If i were to spend all my time feeling bad for other people, then i would never have any time to do anything else.

I like Shrek 2. It has some very funny bits in it. My only issue with it's domestic box office success is that Shrek 2 will have a very short shelf life. I don't think the jokes will work in 10 years. Hell, in 5 years they might seem stale. Plus knowing that Shrek 3 and 4 are in the pipeline sort of cheapens it all.

I really dont know what everyone has against Shrek 2. I loved it, and thought it was just as good as Shrek. So what if the jokes are based on stuff from today and not universal jokes. Some of the greatest comedy ever is based on stuff from things happening around that time (Charlie Chaplin anyone). And its obvious by the gross and the ridiculous amount of DVDs sold that people agree with me.

SHREK 2 completely deserved all the money that it made. It's one of the best animated films EVER, not to mention one of the best films of last year (the first is as well). I couldn't be happier for it

Yes, I too am upset about this. I don't think Shrek 2 deserved anything close to $440M: it didn't do anything particularly well and it was not a fresh experience in any way, unlike Star Wars in 1977 and The Passion of the Christ in 2004.
I must add, and I am ashamed to do so, that I'm also a little annoyed by the fact that it outgrossed almost all of my favourite films.

I'm not upset that it made so much money... I'm just upset that it's ahead of FAR better movies on the top 10 grossing movies list.

I'm not upset. But the movie was definitely below the quality of any of the films you mentioned--in a "fair" world the box office would have more accurately reflected that. And, as we all know this film's appeal could largely be accounted for by its broader age range audience, and for those who went to see it expecting to see the quality of the original Shrek repeated. That did not happen, but their ticket prices had already been paid.
Don't worry that it finiancially bested ROTK. The LOTR series has gone beyond Shrek2--its oscars, baftas, grammys, etc. etc. have secured its place in cinema history--and that cannot be taken away now.
Perhaps Shrek 3 will recapture the spark of the original Shrek. I hope so--it was indeed fun. But Shrek 2 is a weak link.
