Last worldwide re-release was 2012 which did $350m ($58m domestic).

The 2023 re-release arrives during AVATAR 2's ninth weekend...

What do you think?

The law of diminishing returns tells me it will make less than in 2012. Plus it's coming out in winter when pandemic flareups are pretty much guaranteed, so people will just catch it at home if they want to see it.

I'm not sure of the significance of Avatar: The Way of Water, besides possible double-features? Maybe having the same director is an interesting side note for us enthusiasts, but to the average moviegoer I'm not sure that matters enough to boost Titanic's fortunes.

I see nothing but obstacles, so I went with option 1; under $100m.

I though this would probably be under $30m. Can't see people clamoring for this. That said it's Cameron and Titanic so I guess anything can happen.

Thought I'd bump this. Titanic was released exactly 25 years ago today!

It did ok. Won a few things. Made a bit of money. Made us question wooden board surface area and density more so than any other movie in film history.

For old time's sake, here are the daily box office numbers:

Dec 19 Friday 1 $8,658,814 2,674 $3,238 $8,658,814 1

This looks pretty bad for a $200M budgeted movie. Not sure if it will be able to recover from an under $10M opening day. Scream 2 opened to $32,926,342 last weekend, a movie with a $24M budget. Poor Cameron. Let's see how this goes. Maybe the holidays will be kind to it.

Titanic has no chance to make a profit.

Tarantino's follow-up to Pulp Fiction opens at Christmas and will demolish it!

Surprised there's no re-release trailer yet...

It's going to make next to nothing. Domestically a couple mil' at best. Similar to the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 2022 re-release. Globally, sticking with option 1; under $100m. But it's not going to be close to that mark either. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes $35 million worldwide.

Didn’t the last rerelease make like 350 million WW 10 years ago.

They still like 4 minute titty scenes though. I don’t think it’ll do much domestic, but should probably do 100+ overseas. Depends on the theater count of course

Imagine a double billing of Titanic and Avatar. That’s 6 hours!

This - Algren pretty much summed it up.

Yeah I expected they'd have one out to release with Avatar. Missed opportunity.

Yes, agree with this.

Interestingly, it reminds me of back after the Star Wars re-issues in 97, there were rumors that Spielberg was prepping a special edition Jaws for its 25th anniversary in 2000 and a special edition ET for it's 2002 20th Anniversary. Jaws never happened but ET did and made about $35m domestic which was short of original expectations.

Titanic was still in theatres then so its mind blowing to think we are now 25 years on - the same amount of time from that time back to Jaws.

It will probably do about as well as the Jaws/ET re releases from mid last year.

I'm going to this with my boyfriend 100%.

Genius move whoever decided to do it for Valentine's Day.

This actually has V-Day to itself so looks like it may clean up.

Titanic and Avatar both in the Top 5 at the same time....

I understand why they went for this but do people actually want to have a date movie where the couple is doomed in the end (spoiler alert) for Valentine's Day?

Why not? It's still a romantic film.

I saw this when it was re-released in 3D back in 2012. I told myself if it were ever released in theaters again I'd watch it there but not at home. I'm still not sure if I'm going to see this or not though. I haven't seen it since the last time I saw it on the big screen.

Absolutely, it makes it all the more romantic. Also the movie does end on a positive note with them reuniting in her afterlife or dream or whatever.

Fun fact, the biggest single day gross of Titanic's entire run was Valentine's Day, its 58th day of release, where it made $13.05 million!
