Pretty crazy to look back at Hunger Games box office. The opening on the first one was crazy.

Thinking this won't do more than Fantastic Beasts 1 but who knows, maybe enough time has passed and maybe hype will be there

Numbers around FB 1 sound about right. 225m+ Having games in the movie will help. But obviously the book is nowhere near as popular

Hunger Games at its peak was bigger than Potter at BO domestically. After all despite last potter movie having all the hype, 1st Hunger movie comfortably did beat it. So I expect this prequel to do better than FB movies as well. Question is how well its done. if done well I can see 120/300 kind of run.

Eh Hunger Games felt like a very of the moment franchise. The drop off for Mockingjay kinda shows that. Its legacy is nowhere near HP despite how big the first 2 were.

Yeah the Mockingjay movies sullied the brand for sure. Had they kept the quality up the demand for this would be way higher

Because Mockingjay was a shit book. And yhen they decided to split the book in two. Like why?

I havent read this book but i hope it's at least on the original level because catching fire is unreachable

I actually liked the Mockingjay book more than Catching Fire but the movies did not work out that way. Splitting the books was especially dumb since the first half had no action and the second half had no compelling drama.

This one could be an irrevelant flop or get adopted by all the kids who have grown up on Fortnite and other Battle Royale games. It's got some heavy competition though with Dune taking fans of literature, Marvels taking fans of girl power and Wish taking the kids.

Trailer's pretty good. For now I'm gonna guess a medium performance, like 72/180.

Watching the trailer made me realise that all those Hunger Games movies before, all that money earned, all the books published ... and the series has zero cultural footprint. This fifth movie looks just as bad as the others. But the bandwagon has long passed, so it will struggle to perform.

The book this is based on was incredibly forgettable. However, it does feature the games agsin which is what propelled the first 2 films to such heights.

It will probably have legs since it has several weeks with no new competition, though the opening will be subdued coming after Dune and The Marvels.

Agreed. It peaked quickly and then the public lost interest fast. Splitting the last book into two was a terrible mistake, the fact that there were no titular hunger games in them was already bad but then they stretched out an already boring and thin plot. Ruined the hype for the franchise. It's really Suzanne Collins' fault for running out of ideas for book 3. It was such a weird, ham-fisted, unbelievable plot. The entire book is literally about Katniss getting flown to war zones so they can film propaganda TikTok videos. Compare that to the incredibly high stakes of the first film, about a young woman sacrificing herself to protect her sister and fighting for her life against an oppressive regime. That's why it did $150M OW, it had a compelling premise with a character you instantly rooted for.

I feel like doing a continuation with JLaw would be in both’s interest.

Dune then Marvels and then this all in a row is kind of ridiculous. I think Dune should move to a more empty slate.

Honestly, it looks good. I'm kind of surprised. It might be the best since Catching Fire. It's not like that would be difficult. The first two were terrific, but the Mockingjay films kind of ruined the series for me. Definitely went out with a whimper.

Before there was a trailer, I thought maybe it could do under 100 million. Now I see it going comfortably above that.

I feel this will tank now TBH. Rachel Zegler is gonna be big box office poison, and the marketing is unexciting.

November has four big movies that are all courting young women. One will breakout, one will go down in flames and the other two will be fine and boring. I'm just not sure which one is which. :P

This will flop big time. I am expecting sub 40m OW. I will revisit if presales are better than expected. Look at Marvels have really bad presales(under 40% of Guardians which itself had meh presales at this point) and so there is little hope for this movie. I predict Freddys will have bigger OW than Marvels and Hunger Games.

What a dumpster fire November is fast becoming. I'd really do think Freddy's is a solid chance to outgross both Marvels and Hunger Games.

I do hope the likes of Napolean, Holdovers and Thanksgiving do well.

I think Thanksgiving will be a bit of a breakout.

I'm also hoping Thanksgiving can do well. But didn't I see it's opening on a weekend with 2-3 other releases? It will get overshadowed in the media even if it's a success.

No buzz whatsover for sure. It's inevitable that Katniss will come back eventually to reboot this francise. Lawrence needs a big hit and LG would be willing to pay. It would be near impossibly to ever come close to the hype of the original films though which would now adjust to $500M+.

I think this will do Maze Runner numbers. It appeals to the same group of people who like mid range budget dystopian YA flicks but not much beyond that. Without JLaw/Katniss there's no emotional stakes to make it relatable to non-fans.

I think one way to make this stand out would've been going with a hard R rating. Just go full on Purge/Saw level violence which fits the plot perfectly. Show the Hunger Games tributes literally hacking away at each other instead of the shaky cam/blink and you miss it style of the original films.

But with the same style and level of violence as the original films, it just comes across like a cheaper copy.
