$400m is in play for TG2 while $70m is in play for Everything.

Massive for Top Gun. Great weekend.

Bob's Burgers # is pretty mediocre. And lol at Downton Abbey's drop.

Lost City increased this weekend, probably due to driveins with TG. Great legs as $100m didn't look certain before.

Everything Everywhere still having a PTA over 2k. They should expand it one last time next weekend.

TG may be the longest gap between movies for a sequels (not counting Disney's DTV sequels like Bambi 2 :funny: ).

Interestingly another film that had one of the longest gaps between films was The Hustler (1961) to The Color of Money (1986), also starring Tom Cruise.

This is a game changing OW for many reasons. Bringing back older audiences. Having a $150M+ 4 day box office tally for a film 36 years old. We're going to see a lot of old IP getting re-imagined.

There was a precedent though. Cobra Cai managed to make a movie like The Karate Kid relevant again with essentially the same cast nearly 40 years later. Do think that model + TG will be replicated by Hollywood alot in the next 5 years. Willow 2's Disney Plus release is out later this year as well as Hocus Pocus 2 + a new Sister Act 3 so should be interesting to see what manages to get a theatrical release.

Absolutely. I feel like they will since basically nothing opens.

Hocus Pocus 2 should be getting a fucking theatrical release. Especially since apparently the test screening went well. Disney is so annoying. :P

The signs were there, but its still hard to believe we're living in a world where Top Gun 2 made $151M in its first 4.5 days. One of the most surprising opening weekends ever for me.

There was a time where 150 mil total would've seemed pretty good for this

These days its not a surprise at all with fine grained pre sales data we have. I knew on the 1st day of presales that this is breaking out big and once it had universal acclaim with early reviews, it was inevitable.

I honestly agree with you lol. I've been so adamant in thinking this will not open over $100m despite all the tracking because it just didn't make sense to me. But I guess this is getting a lot of people who don't go to the movies and the movie is getting really high praise so yay theaters. Idk if another movie like this can open to these heights anytime soon but we'll see.

I knew this film had major over 40 appeal and expected a $200m+ total but never though it would open to $150m.

Amazing and all the better because it was released by Paramount who is having a stunning year and so good to see non Disney films doing so well.

I feel like worst case for that would be 150 Million total but it could honestly do 200 Million. What a waste.

It sounds like Paramount wants to get Top Gun 2 on Paramount+ and PVOD sooner to get out of paying Cruise and producer David Ellison back end.

Paramount underestimated Sunday by at least $2m...

Given it's Memorial Day I don't see how this doesn't have an amazing hold today. I would not be shocked if some groups booked out theaters for today. The final 4 day tally will be interesting to watch.

Also a fascinating tidbit. Apparently the majority of tickets being sold are for before 7 pm showings and dominated by matinees. Makes sense given older audiences see movies earlier in the day but it just shows that there is a whole lot more younger audiences who may go see this next week and throughout the summer as it becomes a pop culture event. I feel like this will coast past $400M and the high end really is anyone's guess as it could possibly go up July 4th weekend to get a second wind at the box office.

This. While it's got the "record" either way, it'd be annoying if it comes in barely below Pirates 3's 4-day plus previews (stupid it had $13.2m cut out of its opening weekend). Don't want a "New Record! But only if..." scenario.

Although... if Pirates 3 would hold onto it unofficially (with its previews included), it continues to show how what was considered a "disappointing" opening / record back then wasn't really if it has managed to hold onto it for so long.

POTC3 also had the disadvantage of being the 3rd 3quel in the same month! So was bound to look disappointing following two films that passed $120M in 2 of the previous 3 weeks.

Spidy3 $151M
Shrek 3 $122M
POTC 3 $115M ($153M 4day + Thurs previews)

It probably would have opened to $10-15M more if it had more room from the other two.

Empire City is now saying 34m monday and 160m over 4 days. Signs of crazy legs for sure. If 2nd weekend hold is as good as what I expect, I am seeing 500m Domestic.

It should have strong weekdays with audience skewing older. I am expecting good rather than great hold. But who knows for sure. When something becomes a juggernaut it goes beyond our wildest expectations. TGM might be getting there. Hopefully it gets long 120 day run to maximize its potential.

So right now it's heading to somewhere in the region of $380-$480m domestic. Likely closer to $450m given the cinemascore.
