Great for DS2 even if it missed the high end of predictions. Went from being unknown by the GP to opening as big as the biggest superhero’s (although with some help). Thought it was a shoe-in for $190m with actuals but if it follows Civil War, which opened the exact same dates in 2016 and had Mother’s Day and I think makes an apples-to-apples comparison, it comes in around $188m or so.

Nice to see the holdovers didn't collapse. Even Fantastic Beasts only dropped a bit over 50% despite Dr. Strange's similarity. It's going to get frustratingly close to 100m.

Everything Everywhere All At Once should pass Hereditary by Friday, is almost locked to outdo Lady Bird and can probably be pushed past Uncut Gems if A24 wants.

Northman looks like a 35m finish, and UWMT looks like a sub 20m finish. Sad for original films.

Bad Guys looks like a lock for 80m and could hit the 90-100m realm if it keeps holding super well.

Sonic should hit at least 190m and could get to 200m.

Disney did a good job of marketing this as NWH follow up. So it was able to pull in audience from that movie. But WOM is no where close to what NWH had and so legs would be way worse(apart from this being May vs holiday). Thinking around Civil War legs at this point. So 190/430/1.05B WW. Amazing run indeed.

I wonder how big Thor 4 would be considering that is not tied to this movie or NWH. Of course Thor is popular and Guardians appear in the movie plus it has Bale. I am thinking closer to 150m for now but depending on the hype built close to release, it could be bigger.

A strong number, but only getting $185M off a $90M opening day(s) is a bit troubling? I know we live in a different world, but even the extremely frontloaded Civil War had a much better Saturday drop/increase. Did Strange even increase at all from Friday? Is Marvel losing its appeal to weekend-loving family audiences or do they all just see the movies on Thursday now along with the superfans?

Though again, $185M on a just-barely-crossover movie is still pretty crazy. It's nice to have a massive summer kick off weekend after several years off.

Anything over 400 is pretty damn good for Dr Strange 2

Saturday bump from true Friday was 6%. Not on par with other recent MCU films but given the film's WoM seems at best decent and it really isn't a kid friendly movie not bad. True test of where it'll end up is 3rd weekend. Next weekend will be predictably huge near 70% and people online will act like the sky is falling.

Never thought, right before Doctor Strange 1, came out that its sequel would gross nearly $200M in its opening weekend. Marvel really is having a run for the ages. The neat way they treated the non-MCU Marvel characters in the DS2 cameos (and before, how they improved upon Spiderman after the Sony debacles) show that they have the creative Midas touch.

I don't think they can fail, not really. They might, eventually, start to decline, but they've set the bar so high, they can experience sizable declines and still achieve big hits.

Having the catalog on Disney+ also gives them access to an audience they may not have had otherwise, and allows people to easily begin the MCU for the first time or get caught up without having to pay significant money to either buy/rent each movie.

Disappointing IM. It had an identical previews to OW multiple as Spider-Man and far more front loaded than Endgame or Infinity War. Thinking poor WOM is already setting in

That's crazy. Scream went on Paramount+ on March 8, but it did not have too much impact. With Top Gun 2 releasing on MD weekend, I'm sure TG2 will fudge TLC to $100m mark if it needs it.

Paramount Plus is a service most people don't have so hopefully won't affect it much.

That would be strong. On par with Civil War Monday and stronger than GOTG 2 monday despite GOTG being higher on Sunday
