 Re: Weekend Estimates
The holds for most movies this week are pretty insane.
Dog will hit 4x multiplier, Uncharted 3x multiplier, Spidey will get to $800m+ and Sing 2 will hit $160m+

 Re: Weekend Estimates
People are finally, clearly back in the habit of going to the movies. It makes not only the decision with "Turning Red", but even with films like The Adam Project - they are missing out on a lot of revenue at this point and The Batman benefiting from the open market greatly.
This almost certainly would have been $70m had the weather not been so shitty in the northeast. Batman should still be in mid/high 40s next week and could be in the $30m ballpark even with Lost City opening soon. Batman held quite overseas, too. A $800m+ global total is looking pretty realistic at this point.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
If Sunday drop ends up being below 32% then drop would be below 50%. Wow.

Dumb dumb dumb decision by Disney. HUGE! Missing out on $500m WW easily. Netflix I understand cause they’re streaming company.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
I think these kind of gigantic failures, i.e Turning Red, are likely necessary to make studios realize how vital theatrical is to revenue. Red is a colossal miss.

Incredible number. Very happy for the theaters that were able to pull off the $35 tickets.

Pretty ridiculous but sadly smart to overprice those tickets. They honestly should've done screenings today as well

 Re: Weekend Estimates
This weekend is probably the best one so far of the pandemic indicative of future growth prospects.
Lots of people are catching up on movies in theaters a long time which demonstrates a flood of new moviegoers coming back to theaters. All across the board. Dog looks to get past $70M. Scream gets a 23% drop. Death On A Nile under 10% drop.
Also 2 weeks from the Oscars and there isn't one Oscar movie in the top 10? Turning Red probably could have opened to $60M+ this weekend but enough has been said on that one.
Batman's drop is exceptional. $450M+ is very possible.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Yeah it's sad how Oscar noms didn't really do a thing but most of the nominees are available on streaming. Licorice Pizza expanded wide too late after doing relatively well in under 1000 theaters for weeks.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Fantastic hold, the public is clearly embracing this new Batman. Sequels guaranteed.
Kind of crazy that Disney would make such a stupid decision. Maybe the new CEO has a grudge against Pixar for some reason.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
It is a shame though that China is going back into lockdown right before The Batman gets released there. Wonder when the stars are going to align for Hollywood again there (hopefully Big Jim gets his way).

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Insane hold by Spiderman. Wow. It needed no help getting to $800m.
Batman ultimately hitting $370m is another boxoffice win that we needed. Agreed that Disney missed out on an easy $200m+ DOM/$400m+ OS. Perhaps the family market isn't quite there yet.
But going back to Spiderman. It actually happened. Another $800M behemoth so soon after the pandemic. Wow!

 Re: Weekend Estimates
It's just ironic cause Pixar films would be successful by the demo who is going to theaters now... lol we'll never know how one would do if they never go to theaters. Let's see what happens with Lightyear...

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Well we would have of it was a premium. I think I understand the reasoning of having one huge non premium release added in. Parents will never get rid of Disney+ as a result, and they’ve done so well. I think the only thing they really lose is a chance at an Oscar, or maybe they’re that confident in another film winning.

It had/is having an Oscar qualifying run at the El Capitan. I believe that's how Luca qualified for awards as well.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Y'all acting as if you were losing money because of Turning Red.
Disney+ is legit the worst streaming platform so they have to beef it up between new releases. Sucks that it's Pixar but whatever. Disney+ needs them more than theaters do right now

 Re: Weekend Estimates
We might not be losing money but we could be losing future Turning Reds and Souls if Pixar thinks that only the Lightyears and Finding Dorys are going to be released in theaters.

As for Sing, here's just how dramatic the current market has been for its holds its first 12 weekends: -Sing 1 saw 3/12 weekend drops under 28.5% with 9/12 above that level. Avg. dip was -29.0% -Sing 2 has seen just 2/12 weekends NOT under 28.5%. Avg. dip of its run has been -20.4%.
