Turning Red 55m

JK, nothing is opening this weekend like at all. I don't even know of any limited releases.

The Batman- -60%
Uncharted- -35%

Would be so nice if it dropped in the 50s but I'll go with 63% drop. Hopefully weekend 3 is nice.

Seems too divisive to get sub 60, but it's not impossible.

61% drop, 50m 2nd weekend sounds about right.

Turning Red seems like slightly weaker reviews than Soul and Coco but better than Luca and Onward

Turning Red is dropping on Disney Plus, not in theaters. Idiotic decision made by Disney back in January.

though they are also having specials screening in only 2 theaters (LA & NY) for award purpose.

That's why I said just kidding!

With the good reviews, and the box-office having some momentum, I also think Turning Red could have topped $50m this weekend.

It's a bummer. At least Uncharted will have a good month with nothing else stealing its screens.

Hmm... Maybe they can change the eligibility rule for award contention to include a wider theatrical release to push back against streaming and theatrical windows.

+1. Awards celebrate CINEMA, not tv movies.

Hope the quality of Pixar doesn't deteriorate. Can't think talent likes their products getting the at home experience.

Are we maybe 5 years off from some of these making it onto this list? :(

Turning Red reviews are fantastic... such a fail

Pixar is definitely pissed at Disney (Bob Chapek). Not just from Disney continuing to release their films as Disney+ originals, as stated by their employees, but also because Disney is censoring content in the films now, too, as stated by their employees.

Makes me wonder if Pixar can breakaway from Disney at some point.

That's what Pixar gets for signing a deal with the devil. Disney is an evil corporation that cares about its bottom line at the end of the day, they will throw minorities under the bus if it means making more money from conservative countries that offer big box office rewards. Poor delusional Pixar animators who bought the 'woke' PR nonsense.

I think it will be difficult just due to the two brands being so interlinked.

Though imagine Paramount Pixar or Sony Pixar lol. They'd definitely get more love.

Turning Red definitely feels like it would be more primed to have surpassed Sing 2 post Omicron, open family market, and in the absence of Spidy's opening. It's reviews are even better than I was expecting. Probably could have cleared $200M+.

Very curious to see how Sonic does OW. The first ended up in those strange circumstances at #2 for the year 2020 behind only Bad Boys 3. $140,522,219 by weekend #4 off of a $7,704,067 from Onward, finished with $148,974,665 given box office fell off a cliff that following week. In normal times probably would have gotten to $170M. Sonic will essentially channel all the untapped potential Turning Red had in theaters.

In another strange way, Sonic was the last or second last movie many families saw pre-pandemic lockdown in theaters. The sequel is oddly bookending the re-opening and lifting of a lot of restrictions so expect it could be well received by families or have goodwill as a "return to normal."

Also who doesn't like Knuckles and Tails?

At first I was thinking Sonic would do just fine but having the market so empty I'm feeling it'll be big. Kinda similar to how Venom 2 exploded out of nowhere. Will probably do at 65m+.

Looking at the theaters counts this weekend, only seven movies are in more than 900 theaters. That's one of the lowest number of truly wide releases in a while, isn't it? I'm guessing a lot of that has to do with The Batman eating up screens, but also with THe Batman being the only truly major release of the last three weeks (Studio 666 is already on the way out).

Weird that next weekend has four wide releases, but only one of them (X) is possibly going to be in over 2,000 theaters and the other three (Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Umma, The Outfit) are gonna be in under 1,600 theaters.
