The Theatrical Window
Can someone explain to me how shortening a theatrical window increases profits? Doesn’t it encourage people to expect movies for free or very low cost rather than to pay to see them in theaters? Isn’t the highest profit margin on theatrical tickets? Don’t you miss out on having 2 pay windows, since many people who see a film in theaters would subsequently rent or buy it on home media?

I see it as more trying to build subscribers for HBOMax, Disney+, etc.

Re: The Theatrical Window
There is also the case where streaming services charges money eventually similar to VOD today and ofcourse you are getting a monthly fees from subscribers. Studios don't make much money after first few weeks for movies in theaters so I don't see any benefit for them other than the option of people buying them later but that can easily be made back by a few 100's of long term subscribers to your streaming service.

Re: The Theatrical Window
I think they'll settle on a happy medium of 30-45 days eventually which supports both theatrical and streaming revenue. Not good for theatres unless they renegotiate their weekly cuts.

Re: The Theatrical Window
I was thinking more like, what inspired studios to go from months and months of a theatrical window, before streaming services were even big? Like when I was little, movies had like 6 month to a year theatrical window before being released on DVD. Like Monsters Inc. for example came out on DVD a year after theaters. I can’t imagine the “see it now or you’ll miss it” didn’t help films at the box office significantly. Why create a “just gotta wait 45 days” culture?

Kind of feel like consumers created the mess of the culture to rush out?
The need to see things before others with social media, be in the know, etc. People don't seem as patient anymore and need everything now.

They want it sooner and more of it. This was only accelerated with people staying home due to the pandemic. Also - viewing habits began to change over the last decade with the onset of binging (streaming shows) so viewers want everything now and not willing to wait as they once did. While piracy plays a part - it's not the key driver seeing that piracy was flourishing while box office was still booming.

Re: The Theatrical Window
I am hoping that maybe the declining subscriber numbers at Netflix will maybe compel them to introduce longer theatrical windows for Netflix films in theaters. No reason something like The Gray Man deserves to go straight to streaming, and it would be a great way to promote growth for the company and get money for the stockholders Maybe Apple Tv as well. It is a travesty that the Best Picture winner was basically seen by no one in theaters and barely more overall due to Apple's low subscriber base

The introduction of an ad-supported tier won't do much unless the content improves.

Even after Stranger Things ends in Season 5 they could just pump out a movie every few years

Re: The Theatrical Window
The 45 day window is honestly too short, especially when it's going straight to a streaming service. It should be 60 at least.

The 70ish window that Shang Chi and Eternals got seemed to work lovely for them

The Grey Man's trailer is very cool. Would probably make at least $40M opening weekend.

Re: The Theatrical Window
Especially for original films that can only open so high. Films like Elvis or Don't Worry Darling are going to potentially gross significantly less than they could have more so than something like The Batman or Fantastic Beasts

Re: The Theatrical Window
Streaming looks like it is going to die a quicker death than anyone expected. Netflix embracing the profits of the theatrical window (no doubt in their plans) will only reinforce the failed business model consensus.

Re: The Theatrical Window
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will only get a 48 day window, down from the 70 day windows of much lower grossing Shang Chi and Eternals. Why? Same day as Obi Wan finale as well. It will probably be mostly done by then anyway but still could be the difference between 405m and 425m

Re: The Theatrical Window
Probably hoping to combat any subscriber losses after the hit Netflix took. Doubt they care much if it costs them $10/15 million or something in theaters if there's data to suggest they'll keep and/or gain subscribers in the decision.
I bet there's some in Disney pulling their hair out that they're committed to giving Lightyear a theatrical release. Wouldn't be surprised it gets a 45 day window or something though if they're cutting into Marvel.

Re: The Theatrical Window
They could avoid the "Dr. Strange is most front loaded Marvel movie ever" headlines. Plus, if the shortened window becomes common knowledge, the whole theatrical window will be affected.
Longer theatrical window equals more money. Shorter window equals more people watching it at no extra cost.

Re: The Theatrical Window
I'm all for longer theatrical windows, trust me. But the focus is going to be on maintaining / increasing subscriber numbers.
And the shorter they are, the more impactful it is worldwide, too. Take Lightyear. If it would receive a 45 day window or something from its US release, it's going to take a huge hit out what should be impressive numbers in Japan since it doesn't open until July. Theaters are very anti-streaming in Japan, and all the major chains will drop it the day it becomes available on streaming (like they have other US releases since this all began). Similar thing if Jurassic World: Dominion gets a theatrical window. It doesn't open until late July in Japan, so a 45-60 day window (from its US release) would especially hurt it in the market (could have a month or less of business).
