King's Man - $6.35m

Yikes

Encanto dropped 69% this weekend. It's probably just gonna barely miss $100m.

$39.5m 5-day for Sing 2. Lower than Encanto but it'll make more due to another week of holiday #s.

Far From Home - 81.5m, 69% drop

If Christmas Eve didn't fall on Friday the drop probably would be in the low 60s.

Kings Man is not good, but it’s not doing significantly worse than expected. It was clearly dumped.

Spider-Man Christmas increase is weak. Hopefully the Sunday hold can be better.

The picture will be clearer next weekend as in 2010, nothing dropped more than 5% and most things increased.

From BOG:

Wide release holdovers all dropped 50-70% this wknd, with the exception of #WestSideStory which fell just 23% in its 3rd wknd to $2.8M. Total #boxoffice is $23.9M with holiday week ahead.

So WSS has the best drop by far this weekend? Could it have a big rebound this week?

Idk about a big rebound but if it plays fine for the holiday it can go for $40m+.

Licorice Pizza's #s are decent considering it went wide Christmas day.

From BOR: The Matrix Resurrections grossed an estimated $12.0M this weekend (from 3,552 locations). Estimated total gross stands at $22.5M.

A $12M 3day weekend over Christmas is a disaster for a film franchise that at one time had the biggest 4day opening weekend of all time and second biggest OW of all time behind Spiderman (2002).

It's hard to decide which one of Matrix and King's men is worst. In terms of drop it's the former but later is also doing franchise killing numbers.

Both will make less than half their predecessors. But Matrix definitely had more going for it. I honestly don’t think Kings Man is that bad considering no one wanted a Kingsman prequel.

Both did awful. I think the 'people will watch multiple movies this holiday season' may not apply to a lot of people this year. A lot of people saw Spider-Man and majority probably won't see another film for the rest of the year.

Interested to see how everything holds till the end of next weekend.

NWH - 81.5m.

Is it running out of audience? I still see hesitancy from older crowd and families to come to Multiplexes. I saw NWH on friday noon at 80% full and majority were young adults. Not that many families or older crowds.

Still one of best BO grosses of all time considering the situation. Its share of overall 2021 BO is just batshit crazy.

If NWH doesn't stablize it'll probably fall between Infinity War and Black Panther. I think it should beat Black Panther though.

Absolutely tragic for Matrix Resurrections. Like wow. A mega bomb. COVID, Christmas Eve on Friday, Wednesday opening, yada yada yada, I get it, but $12M for the weekend for what should've been a slam dunk blockbuster is awful. There is no excuse. And especially when Spider-Man shows audiences WILL come out for an event picture.

I guess this just confirms that the Matrix brand truly was ruined by the bad reception to the sequels in 2003. Not even Keanu having a resurgence thanks to John Wick could save this. And reviews weren't toxic so you can't even blame that. Audiences clearly did not care to return to this world after how much they hated Reloaded/Revolutions (more the latter).

Apparantly Matrix cost $190m to make... lolol what the fuck. You'd think for such an expensive film they would've given it a shot to makw some money.

Didn't GvK cost almost the same? WB was thinking that Matrix will propel more long time customers to Max which would be a longer term revenue for them I guess.

Ehhh, I think the actual budget is closer to $120M and the rest went into Keanu, Lana and Carrie Anne's pockets.

That’s still the budget though? Can’t say that I’m too surprised, would have thought it would make at least $20m over the 3 day weekend. I’m sure with omicron it probably made more people watch it on Max than would have normally. Do they ever release numbers for that?

Looks like Sony underestimated Spidey's Sunday by $3m...

This obviously is not a normal winter and there simply isn't room for 2 big films. Matrix is getting overwhelmed by Spiderman and HBO max decision.

What's abnormal when Spidey broke records? How is Matrix flopping make this winter abnormal?

Post subject:  Re: Christmas 2021 Weekend Estimates

I think the issue is that audiences will come out for films that feel like events, and only Spider-Man feels like an event right now. Matrix feels incredibly calculated, like a cash grab meant to exploit IP.

But original films, like 1917, Knives Out, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, can still be events. Any film that can get people talking can be an event. And no one is talking about Matrix.

We’re still in the post pandemic box office recovery period. These films were made for a market that is different. Now studios can adjust their future offerings for the current climate.
