Dune. What went right?
Sci fi movies like this usually completely bomb but this one is doing pretty decently especially considering it’s available to stream on HBO Max. What’s working for this one?

Well it's not exactly a runaway smash but I do think it's avoided the flop label at this point, which it very much was in danger of.
What went right? The book has a dedicated following, good reviews, there's an appetite for a truly epic quality film, and Timothee is one of the bright new stars of cinema today in a role that made sense for him as a step into bigger films.

I was predicting bomb (you don't have to worry about me winning the derby contest this time). I think DV has a fanbase and casting Chalamet instead of the next Taylor Kitsch in John Carter, Aiden Ehrenreich in Solo type move.

I don't think things are that well for Dune but I'd say the scope and handling of the source material in this case worked. The books being famous also helped. I highly doubt many people went to see this because of Timothee.

Not much?
A ton of big name actors and massive marketing budget helped it avoid the obvious bomb label? It’s a huge money loser.

It's definitely moving the books. The first book has been atop the sales charts for awhile now, and the individual sequels (especially the second book) as the two boxsets (books 1-3, and books 1-6) are also ranking very well.
Could prove to expose the series to all new audiences for any future films to excel.

The brand is stronger coming out of the weekend. Now we will likely get Dune 2, and then maybe Dune 3, Dune the series, Dune spinoffs, Dune on Ice, etc...
Though I do wonder what the reaction to the David Lynch one was on its opening weekend. Did people hate it right away? Or were people saying $6M is good all things considered...

In Germany e.g. it was ranked No. 13 of the year with 1.6m admissions... The remake is currently on a path to around 1.7m admissions...
