 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
So previews used to be at midnight, sometimes at 10pm...
Than 8pm, 7pm, 6pm, 5pm, 4pm, now 3pm and just add two more days of IMAX previews for good measure...

 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
Being a darker (literally and figuratively) Batman probably doesn't help matters. I've enjoyed the humor present in earlier films.

 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
There is some humor in the movie. Thank god it wasn't Marvelized, the tone in the movie is perfect for Batman.

This is not a bad opening, not every Batman movie has to break records.

 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
I think if you look at this as being the Batman Begins of this new series, then it’s pretty great. It’s a 3 hour noir crime drama too. I think the opening only tells part of the story, we need to see some initial signs of legs before we know that it’s a true success. I’ll be happy if it settles around $120m and then has the legs to come close to $400m.

 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
This is a reboot. It's going to have to rebuild faith, high interest, back into the franchise and DCEU (is this apart of that? I'm honestly confused with all this).
I consider it a pretty strong number. There wasn't much hype around it with the general public. So breaking $20 million in previews with what I expect to be almost exclusively fans is great. Matching Batman v Superman's OW was too much. That movie was meh, but it had a lot of hype going into it. But if it can gross as much, or more, then we're in good shape I think.

This is definitely not in any sort of DC Universe. Reeves was asked if Superman could exist in a world like this, and he said something to the effect of "Could the characters in Batman react to an alien being landing on Earth? Yeah, maybe, but I don't see myself incorporating that." Lol. Think it's going to stay a stand-alone, with possible offshoots like the planned HBO Max show built around Penguin.

 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
I think it’s a solid number and on par with reasonable expectations seeing that this is the “Batman Begins” of this trilogy.

 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
Obviously not a great number but not in flop territory either. We'll see where it ends but this should be pretty alarming for "adult tentpole" films. The market is empty, awareness is huge, brand IP is as good as it gets basically, product quality is excellent. This should be doing more.

I see your argument but I disagree, I don't think it's as good as it gets IP-wise because Batman is exhausted as a property at this point. In the last 15 years we have seen a whole Batman trilogy with Joker, then a new Batman with DCEU, LEGO Batman, then another Joker film (which did feature Bruce Wayne in it), multiple Suicide Squad-related films featuring Batman cameos and associated villiains, and now another reboot. Every one of those films was a hugely publicized affair and at some point it becomes too much. Audiences get bored and they're looking for something new and I think the Batman universe has been overextended in the last decade. Spider-Man had a similar issue but they brought in other Marvel characters to make it more fresh and exciting, it wasn't just another Peter Parker story, now we had Iron Man being his mentor (and then Doctor Strange assumed that role in the last film). But IMO this film registers as 'another reboot'. It doesn't even feature a villain we have never seen before. It also features the third iteration of Catwoman in the last couple decades. I don't even think it's a similar situation to Batman Begins because that was coming out after Batman was considered a dead toxic IP due to the horrible Schumacher (RIP) films, but the character wasn't overexposed as there had been a 7-8 year break with no Batman content in media after 'Batman & Robin'. And it was a very fresh take on what had been known up to that point as a really cheesy, tongue in cheek franchise. I know this film is a different take but it doesn't come across as that different from Nolan trilogy or Batfleck tbh. Serious tone, more violence, murky colours, those were present in those other films. It's not as radical a re-invention as the Nolan trilogy, at least from the marketing.

Saturation plays a role but a well-received, properly marketed Batman film opening in a dead market doing just a bit more than 2019 RT rated, actionless emo-drama JOKER is absurd

 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
Deadline is saying $55m opening day and $110m opening. That is bad.
There is a serious problem for non-Marvel/non-family films, it seems. Matrix, Bond and now Batman have underperformed significantly. The late 20x and older crowd really is just staying home.

 Re: Previews/Friday Numbers/Weekend numbers
Matrix in hindsight was doomed sadly by dual at home and theatrical release, and toxic reception for the sequels that still had an impact nearly 20 years later.
Batman was damaged by Justice League potentially. That muddled the post Nolan aura around the franchise.
Bond did pretty well for a movie driven by older audiences in the fall given the circumstances with $161M. Lost a lot of buzz in the wake of being in Venom 2's 2nd weekend with Halloween the next weekend then Dune.
Last Bond was at $200M and think it also lost some buzz from the lukewarm reception of Spectre. 6 years was also a long time between Bond movies. Overall don't feel Matrix vs Bond are remotely close.
