I'll wait till the whole weekend is over before making any solid judgements. Hopefully Saturday is a good day. As long as $120m happens and it has solid legs I'm satisfied.

Regardless of how high expectations were, netting only the second $50+ million opening day of the 2020s big win for this movie. By the end of tomorrow it will be WB's biggest hit since Joker over two years ago, and by the end of its run it could be their highest grossing domestic release since Wonder Woman nearly 5 years ago. I imagine the studio will be happy, especially since WOM seems to be strong enough that they can go forward with a sequel with no creative issues like they did post-BVS.

Meanwhile, the top 3 holdovers appear to be hanging in there really well:

-50%, -35%, and -19% holds respectively. If Dog was able to weather The Batman's opening day that well, it is gonna make a killing over the next couple weeks with zero competition.

Spider-Man drop is insane. Should hit $800m as with no competition it has a few weeks till its available on digital. Crazy performance.

Uncharted drop is decent and Dog is doing great.

So many movies held really well which is surprising. I expected Uncharted to be hit harder. Also wasn't expecting Spider-Man to get to 800 Million but with this great hold it will. Batman was going to be its biggest hurdle.

It would have been nice to see how high Sing 2 could have gone if it weren't on streaming so fast. As is it should reach 160.

Great holds. Spidy will be at $1.9B likely in the end which is crazy given how much has impacted global box office.

Thinking Sunday drop will be better so hopefully it's actually $130m.

2.6 multiplier would have Batman hit that DC sweetspot of $330ish that BvS, Joker, Aquaman and Suicide Squad hit. Lol

This was only the second weekend after Spidy's holiday weekend to hit $150M+ for the top 10 since Dec. 27-29, 2019 when SW Ep. 9 led the box office.

Solid start for Batman though being in the shadow of Spidy's $800M run would be a tough act to follow. Great start to March!

Uncharted passes $100M which is fantastic. Could end up at $130M-140M. The market has also expanded which is promising for the box office year.

Dog is holding on and will probably finish with $60M from a $15M budget. Could easily have done under $20M.

Spidy has another fantastic hold. $4.4M in its 12th weekend and 12 straight weekends in the top 4 is unbelievable. Looks to coast past $800M now.

Sing 2 has another great hold. So silly to not have a family film for 4 months. Sonic should greatly benefit from the lack of product.

Scream passes $80M!

Disney was so stupid not to put Turning Red in theaters. A family movie could have done pretty well between Sing and Sonic. Now The Bad Guys will open just two weeks after Sonic. Very smart.

And Fantastic Beasts the week in between. :noway:

Logic of:
-No family movies for 4 months.
-3 family movies in 3 weeks side by side in April.
-Taking Turning Red to streaming (well investors driven still frustrating though)

:grrr:

It really is idiotic. With Batman doing well I think Turning Red could've opened to 40m+. In turn I doubt that many new subscribers will join D+ for it but idk

It's apparently to keep people subscribed between the end of Book of Boba Fett and Moon Knight, since the highest profile original between those was originally the Proud Family reboot.

Have to give props to WB. They pretty much sacrificed their box office slate during the pandemic for other studios to see when moviegoers were ready to come back.

Disney hasn't felt as invested in the theatrical experience. Short term it makes sense and they can rest on MCU for a while but I can't imagine Pixar likes being second tier to drive Disney+ subscribers with most of their films.

Ugh I don’t know Turning Red looks barely above a Disney channel show

Quote:
MONDAY AM: Rival studios easily saw Batman doing in the mid $130Ms yesterday AM, and today Warner Bros. is reporting $134M after a $34.1M Sunday, -21% from Saturday. Presales were strong throughout the weekend. Look for Batman to ease 50% in weekend 2 with an estimated $67M. Batman doesn’t encounter any studio wide competition until March 25, when Paramount opens its Sandra Bullock-Channing Tatum-Brad Pitt-Daniel Radcliffe adventure romantic comedy The Lost City, which is getting ready to blast off at SXSW next weekend.

I'd say they definitely have a strong year ahead of them, but then thinking about Disney they have Avatar, Dr. Strange, Thor, Lightyear. Those 4 films alone may be enough to win the year. Kind of crazy that after 2 years we might have at least 5-10 300 million films again.

Batman isn't too surprising, I had it performing more like No Time to Die as a Sat-Sun matinee kind of film. Next weekend will show a better idea of where it ends up.
